One of the Original Six teams in the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup more times (23) than any team history; 24 if you include the one they won pre NHL. But with the last banner being raised in 1993 the franchise and is legions of fans, have been in a dry spell. Since their last Stanley Cup victory, Montreal has made the NHL playoffs 15 times during that stretch but only made it as far as the Conference Final twice losing both times to the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010 and the New York Rangers in 2014.

Bet On Montreal Canadiens Games

Prior to the start of the 2018/19 NHL season, the Montreal Canadiens were 66/1 to win the Stanley Cup. Being in a loaded division with at least three other teams expected to make deep playoff runs left them as a long shot coming into the season.

However after starting the season playing over .500 hockey the books have cut their odds in half and they are currently around +3300 to win the Stanley and looking like a team that can compete for a playoff spot this spring.

Last season the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge were one of the worst teams in the Eastern conference finishing with only 29 wins, 71 points and a -55 goal differential. But with Coach Claude Julien one would think they have a puncher’s chance. Though he has made 2 Stanley Cup finals in his coaching career and winning one with the Boston Bruins in 2010/11 he has not won a playoff series since 2013/14.

Having taken over the position in the latter part of the 2016/17, and after a full season under his belt, the expectation for results are now. But last season the Canadiens were without the heart and soul of their team, Goaltender Carey Price for nearly half the season, and when you only score 209 goals in a season, 3rd worst in the NHL last year, you’d need one of the best goaltenders of this generation to compete.

So far this season however, the have increased last season’s goals per game average from 2.55 to 3.15 which we will have to monitor to see if it will sustain. With team captain Defenseman Shea Weber, and potential breakout candidate Left Winger Max Domi, the only real star power this team has as skaters, this season’s Montreal Canadiens team lacks depth on the blue line and offensive firepower. Last season their leading point getter was Brendan Gallagher with 54 points, not a prolific tally by any means.

But if they can make a trade to land a goal scorer and another defenseman, and IF Carey Price stays healthy and gets hot, Montreal can be the team that no one wants to see come this April. But having not made the playoffs in two of the past three seasons will not sit well with this proud franchise and it’s fans who had been spoiled by success prior to the turn of the century. Though Hockey will always be number 1 in Quebec, they will not want to wait much longer to see progress in their beloved team.

Much like it is when teams face a legend in any sport, the New England Patriots are a solid example in the NFL, teams tend to kick it up a notch when facing the Godfather of NHL squads. Revered by fans at the Bell Centre and around the globe, but becoming public enemy #1 when they head out on the road, is par for the course for a franchise that has won well over three thousand contests.
