Two Journeyman NFL quarterbacks continue on their nomadic paths in the twilight of their respective careers.
One is the talk of the town at the moment, while the other is the reigning Superbowl MVP..
FOLES VS. FITZPATRICK: A 2018 CURVEBALL
How do we analyze this game? The path for Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bucs to win on Sunday is through big, explosive plays which is what he can deliver on his day as seen just last week in New Orleans where he threw for over 400 yards, 4 TDs and averaged almost 20 yards per completion.
Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and OJ Howard are a potent set of weapons and after seeing Julio Jones torch the Eagles secondary in the season opener, there is hope through the air, even with Desean Jackson sidelined. One would think the Bucs struggle to establish a ground game against the stout Defensive line for the Eagles.
The Eagles have the best roster in the NFL until proven otherwise but until Carson Wentz returns they will have a ceiling on their quarterback play as Nick Foles appears to be…well…Nick Foles, a mediocre NFL quarterback.
Fortunately for him they face a Buccaneers defense that is also mediocre at best (they could in fact just be really bad). Still the path for the Eagles to win this game won’t be through big explosive plays, however through ball and clock control and keeping their Defense rested and on the sidelines. Easier said than done.
Nick Foles just doesn’t look up to par. Perhaps he summoned his last moment of greatness in the superbowl and will now ride off into the sunset. In his preseason warmup against the Cleveland Browns he put up a quarterback rating of 57.4 and 0 points. In week 1 off the regular season his QB rating was 50.7. Foles only passed for 117 yards and his longest completion went for 18 yards. It’s hard to see a wide open game when one team won’t make big plays through the air. Combine that with a strong Eagles defense and this game looks to be a tight affair.
Take the Home Underdog +3 and give some though to the under 44. It may be the case that the Eagles are forced to play low scoring games as a necessity until Carson Wentz returns.
