UFC's Biggest Bets that Won
As the year comes to a close, looking back at 2017 proves that the UFC had another remarkable year filled with stunning upsets. However, closer inspection reveals that only 138 of 432 bouts saw an underdog walk away with a victory, a rate of 31.9 per cent, down slightly from 36.8 in 2016 and 38.5 from 2015. The gradual rarifying of upsets makes it more difficult to bet on a big winner.
But upsets will always happen and in 2017 there was still a handful with some that shocked the entire MMA world and shook up the divisions. Cashing an underdog bet is sweet but it's hitting the prop bets that yields an unbelievable profit. Here's a look at the biggest payouts that happened in the UFC this year (odds courtesy of SportsInteraction).
Darren Elkins Wins in a Crazy Comeback
- Elkins wins in round 3 Odds: +2200
- Elkins wins by TKO/KO Odds: +1600
Call it the greatest comeback of this year. Elkins just went from gatekeeper to contender with one big head kick to put out blue-chip prospect Mirsad Bektic in round 3. Elkins was playing the proverbial role of gatekeeper that the -700 favourite Bektic was going to beat up.
While Bektic did put a thorough butt-whooping on Elkins, the "Damage" earned his moniker when he caught Bektic with two minutes remaining polishing him with punches and a head kick. Bektic folded like a chair as Elkins celebrated his career-defining win.
Namajunas Knocks Joanna Jedrzejczyk out in Round 1
- Namajunas wins in round 1 Odds: +2100
- Namajunas wins by TKO/KO Odds: +1300
"Thug" Rose didn't just beat the undefeated and undisputed strawweight champion but ended her in just three minutes. Nobody outside Rose's camp saw it coming. Not even the pound-for-pound best female fighter. Rose entered the fight as a +565 underdog and talks were mostly about Jedrzejczyk breaking Ronda Rousey's record for title defences.
Namajunas was no fluke. She pressured Jedrzejczyk and caught her cleanly dropping her not once but twice. Namajunas finished her off with ground and pound as the once seemingly unbeatable Jedrzejczyyk tapped. Upset of the year.
Kajan Johnson Sleeps Adriano Martins in Third
- Johnson wins in round 3 Odds: +2500
- Johnson wins in by T/KO Odds: +1200
Johnson opened UFC 215 from Edmonton with a bang as he earned his biggest victory with a third-round knockout of Martins. The Canadian lightweight was coming from a two-year layoff and was +450 against his top-20 opponent. Johnson was 2-1 in the UFC but against fighters that quickly got cut by the UFC.
The money was coming in on Martins as he was the entire card's biggest favourite. But Johnson quickly showed he was criminally underestimated as he outstruck Martins and made the fight close before capping it off with a flash KO on the Brazilian cashing one of the year's most underrated upsets.
Beneil Dariush and Evan Dunham Fight to a Draw
- Fight is a draw odds: +5200
Draws are rare in the UFC but a handful still takes place each year. The year so far has had three draws but the most notable is the lightweight bout between top-15 fighters Dariush and Dunham. The back-and-forth brawl saw Dariush hurt Dunham badly in the first as he tried desperately to finish him. Dunham survived.
The next two rounds saw Dunham turn the tables on Dariush as he took over the second and was practically chasing Dariush for the third. The decision didn't surprise anyone as most MMA media outlets saw it as a draw. A rematch isn't a bad idea.
John Moraga Derails Magomed Bibulatov in One Round
- Moraga wins in round 1 Odds: +1400
- Moraga wins by TKO/KO Odds: +1200
The man who formerly challenged pound-for-pound king Demetrious Johnson had seemingly seen his best days behind him. Moraga was coming off a victory to save his job following three consecutive losses. Bibulatov was an unbeaten hype train. Moraga was a +400 underdog with many believing he was being used as a stepping stone to the Russian.
Yet Moraga was still a higher-ranked fighter and the better man for the night as it only took him 98 seconds to end Bibulatov's streak. Something lit a fire in Moraga as he came out guns blazing and quickly caught Bibulatov with a right then finished him with a left to cap off his most impressive UFC victory.
