Jon Jones vs Brock Lesnar: Will The Ultimate Fight Happen?
Jon Jones Challenges Brock Lesnar
The path to Jones vs Lesnar has been foreshadowed in the past. During UFC 100, which Lesnar headlined, Jones fought on the undercard winning impressively over Jake O'Brien.
Seven years later, Jones and Lesnar were both booked for UFC 200 as headliner and co-headliner, respectively. In a twist of fate, both men were popped for PED-usage: Jones before the event, and Lesnar after. Now, the two may finally cross paths inside the octagon.
Jones definitely put an end to his rivalry with Daniel Cormier by knocking him out and then making peace. Jones quickly moved on and called out the former UFC heavyweight champion and current WWE superstar. Lesnar last fought in UFC 200 recording a dominant decision victory over Mark Hunt before having it overturned due to a USADA violation in his post-fight drug test.
He has since performed in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) where he is currently the Universal Champion although mixed reports have hinted at his departure.
“Brock Lesnar, you want to know what it feels like to get your ass kicked by someone 40 pounds lighter? Meet me in the octagon.”
News about Lesnar's return to the UFC started with erroneous reports on him re-entering the USADA testing pool. Regardless, it got spme buzz going and created speculation the former champion is unsure about re-signing with the WWE and have a comeback in MMA.
And now Jones has added fuel to the fire by openly calling him out. A fight Jones is the biggest fight Lesnar can take. His contract with the WWE is until April 2018 presumably after Wrestlemania.
For Jones, he can wait until after April or if he chooses to fight at heavyweight, his next biggest fight is one for the UFC heavyweight title, which is held by Stipe Miocic. Cain Velasquez has the next shot at Miocic and if the fight happens, Velasquez could win.
Jones can fight either man and win the heavyweight title. It adds another narrative for the Jones and Lesnar fight and makes it even bigger. So long as Jones continues to win and both men stay out of trouble, the fight will keep its luster.
Jones vs Lesnar Early Betting Odds
Jones opened as a -245 favourite and has now gone as low as -334. The #1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter is getting all the money with fans confident he's going to run through Lesnar and for good reason. Jones just proved he is not only the division's best fighter but its best wrestler.
Against Cormier, the former Olympian, Jones dominated. Cormier couldn't hold Jones down and was constantly taken down himself. Jones has only surrendered two takedowns his whole career.
If Lesnar can't take Jones down, he is finished.
But Jones has also not fought a man bigger than he. Even if he'll still hold the reach and height advantage, Lesnar is a hulking heavyweight who has to cut down to make the 265-lb limit.
Jones will be giving up 40 lbs or more come fight time. And if Lesnar does successfully take Jones down, he could use his size and strength to keep Jones long enough to steal rounds. But a suspect gas tank and only one fight in the last six years could ultimately seal his fate.
