It has been a slow start to the 2017 MLS season for the Vancouver Whitecaps. The team from BC have accumulated just four points in their opening five matches which sees them level on points at the bottom of the Western Conference standings with Minnesota United.
The Caps had turned a corner when they recorded their first win of the season - a 4-2 victory over LA Galaxy where they trailed 2-1 at half time - however a resounding 3-0 loss to Real Salt Lake last time out highlights the improvement needed. Perhaps their recent elimination from the CONCACAF Champions League will help the side focus on the league and help drive an upswing in form.
Seattle's season to date has been slightly better, although they too have just the one victory from their first five fixtures. Like the Whitecaps, their sole victory was over a good team - they beat the New York Red Bulls 3-1 in week 3. An optimistic fan will point out that the side has also only lost once in the first five rounds, although the reality is that draws against a struggling Montreal side and newcomers Atlanta United are perhaps two-points lost rather than a point gained. Still, the Sounders will travel north of the border on Friday as the more confident of the two sides.
This game will be the first fixture in the Cascadia Cup race for 2017. Vancouver will take confidence from the fact that they have won this Cup in three of the last four seasons, however the Sounders will go into this match having won the last two matches between the clubs - the last of which was a 2-1 come from behind victory featuring two red cards and two penalties (one from each side). There are always talking-points when these two sides meet and this match will be no different. It's a tough match to call, especially this early on in the season, but Seattle look to be more likely to snatch a close victory in this one.
Best MLS Picks Today - April 14, 2017
Friday's earlier match sees the struggling Philadephia Union take on New York City FC at 7pm Eastern Time. The Union are one of just two sides (the other is Montreal) to be winless in their opening five fixtures and have the lowest points tally in the entire MLS with just two draws to date.
They will be desperate to turn this around against a New York side that has had a mixed start to their campaign and are currently 2-1-2 for the season. The key to this fixture will be mistakes, or rather, avoiding them - both sides lost last week due to costly defensive blunders.
With that in mind, we may see a game where both teams focus heavily on securing up their backline and as a result the game could turn into a bit of a stalemate. However, just one of the five fixtures between the two clubs has ended in a draw - the other four matches are split evenly with two wins each. It is hard to see Philadelphia failing to win for the sixth consecutive fixture, and their home advantage may just be enough here. Go for the Union in a low-scoring fixture.
