Premier League Picks: Is Manchester United Ready For The Reds?
The schedule makers have not been kind to Manchester United. Coming off their last International break they had to host Man.City. Now they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool and next weekend is Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge following a Thursday night Europa League game to Fenerbahce. Three intense games, with only 2 days of rest in between all of them, is quite the order.
In a very brief history Jurgen Klopp has gotten the better of the Special One owning a 3-1-1 record heads up. In their most recent meeting, Klopp, the then newly appointed Liverpool manager, helped Chelsea's downward spiral by beating them 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last October.
Now they meet again 12 months later, both wearing red.
Liverpool vs Manchester United odds on William Hill
Klopp's tactic of Gegenpress or "counter-press" has given Mourinho trouble. Liverpool's gameplan is to win the ball back from you in your own defensive half by swarming you with multiple players. When they regain possession, they are 1 or 2 passes away from a clear cut chance on goal. Seeing as they've created more scoring chances than any other premier league team, suggests that it is working to a charm.
Against Manchester City and Guardiola's high pressure, United kept turning the ball over in the first half. After the game Mourinho blamed a couple of players, who almost certainly won't be in his starting 11 this Monday.
Liverpool vs Manchester United Betting Prediction
Manchester United have failed in their first big test of the Mourinho era. They can not afford to fail this one. Coming off a home draw to last place Stoke, which by all accounts felt like a loss, United need a result in a big prime time game. Mourinho will do what he has to. He will crowd the midfield and not allow Coutinho, and Firmino the space they are so good at utilizing.

Klopp got the better of Mourinho when they squared off as managers of Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. Dortmund implemented the same gegenpress but with one key difference; Robert Lewandowski, a huge target man who could dominate centre halves and score at will.
It is not impossible to stop Liverpool. If you concede possession to them as Burnley did, you take away their ability to create turnovers and havoc. The fact that this game is at Anfield allows the road team to sit back and be patient, which is more suited to Mourinho's style. If Liverpool want you to have the ball in order to force you to make a mistake, you counter this by having the ball as little as possible. Burnley defeated Liverpool 2-0 with only 19% of it. Mourinho in some of his most famous, and infamous matches, has won the game with 30% or even 20% possession.
He will kill the game out of necessity, and settle for a point.
In five career matches between these managers there has been a total of 18 goals, well over 2.5 per game. In 14 combined Premier League matches this season Liverpool and Manchester United have gone over 2.5 goals 9 times. Only United have been able to keep a clean sheet, which they accomplished twice. Liverpool has conceded a goal in every game.
The trends suggest this game will go over, but I am steering clear of the total.
