MLS Picks and Parlay: 401 Derby Day

Montreal Impact vs Toronto FC Odds

My Team's Next MatchToronto

We're barely three weeks into the MLS season and we've been blessed with one of the biggest matches in Canadian soccer - Montreal vs Toronto. Regular season form has deserted both of these sides in the opening rounds, and the pair would love to get off the mark, especially against their bitter rivals. Surely one of these teams will experience the luck of the Irish on St Patrick's Day.

The Montreal Impact lost their season opener over on the west coast to fellow Canadians the Vancouver Whitecaps and were also defeated by Columbus after Gyasi Zardes scored a stoppage time penalty to take the game 3-2. The positives are clear - strong second half performances and just the one goal deficit in both of their opening fixtures on the road gives the team plenty to build upon ahead of their first match at home.

Ignacio Piatti opened his 2018 account with a strike against the Crew, and the good news for the Impact is that he has an impressive record against the Reds - more than fifteen percent of his MLS goals have come against Montreal's nearest rivals.

Meanwhile, Toronto FC have played just the one game in the MLS so far this season, losing 2-0 at home to Columbus. While the team looked slightly flat in that match, it was clear in hindsight that the team's immediate focus was on the CONCACAF Champions League, and this may still be the case after they managed to progress from their quarter-final ahead of Tigres, going through on away goals after the tie finished 4-4.

Toronto were heroic in Monterrey, and it was Sebastian Giovinco who stepped up to the plate with a superb free kick to earn the vital second away goal that would ensure they would advance. While there will likely be a few changes made to the starting XI given the travel time and emotion that followed the match in Mexico, Jozy Altidore is one man Greg Vanney should consider retaining - he has scored seven goals in 11 matches against Montreal, his most against any MLS opponent.

The Reds have dominated this fixture over the years, winning twice as many as the Impact (8W, 4D, 4L). They also hold a superior record in Montreal, with four wins to three. Toronto FC won the last fixture at the venue, a 3-1 win in April 2017.

Toronto FC can probably afford to focus on their upcoming semi-final, although it's not for a couple of weeks. We may not see a side with the commitment shown in Mexico, and perhaps a performance more like the one against Columbus. Still, Toronto have great depth and should be good enough to secure a point in a fixture that is important to the fans.

Interestingly, Toronto start this match as slight favourites at +120, while the Impact are at +202. We're predicting the draw here.

MLS Picks Parlay Week 3

There are a total of eight games in the MLS this Saturday. The Columbus Crew travel east to face Philadelphia Union in a match between two teams with perfect records in the MLS thus far. Ok, so it's early days, particularly for the Union who have played just once, although winning is a great habit to get into and both teams will be looking to continue the momentum.

Philadelphia will hope that their very early bye round does not impact their performance against the Crew, who experienced great wins against Toronto and Montreal in the first two rounds. Gyasi Zardes tops the MLS charts with three goals, and Federico Higuain achieved a 50th goal in the MLS against the Impact. He is just one assist short of completing a rare double of 50 goals and assists in the league.

Union forward CJ Sapong just inked a new deal keeping him at the club until at least the end of next season, which is great news considering he netted 16 goals for the club last season (a club record). He has scored six in 14 against the Crew, and Philadelphia have won ten of those fourteen games.

We like the Union at home here, and they are at very decent odds to get the win and end Columbus' perfect start to the season. Go for Philadelphia (+120), catch all the action from 2:00PM ET.

The Collapsing European Super League: Is There Still Hope?
The Collapsing European Super League: Is There Still Hope?

The European Super League (ESL) was supposed to be the breakaway club for top European football clubs, the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Liverpool to name a few.

The full list of Super League clubs:

  • English - Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham.
  • Spanish - Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid.
  • Italian - AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus.

However, plans broke down the very next day after the featured clubs made the announcement, led by Real Madrid’s Florentino Perez. Perez has been defiant in the face of big clubs like Juventus and Manchester City dropping out, with the governing body FIFA also threatening to ban teams from their domestic leagues.

The anger and frustration at the decision to go ahead with a Super League boiled over when fans of Premier League clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham held mass protests outside the relative stadiums. The announcement caused a wave of protest across Europe, as UEFA made it clear that all clubs involved would face repercussions if they were to go ahead and compete in the breakaway Super League.

But, what upset the fans so much and is the Super League really so different from the Champions League?
