Ottawa Aces XIII - New Team Canada's Pro Rugby League

After the success of the Toronto Wolfpack rising to the Super League of the Rugby Football League, the Ottawa Aces were officially announced as the newest pro team in Ontario on March 9th, 2020.

Ottawa rugby fans will have the opportunity to join one of the fastest-growing sports in North America when the team starts to compete in 2021.

Ottawa Aces Join the RFL

Ottawa seeks to follow the example set by the Toronto Wolfpack, a rugby league squad that started at the bottom of the third-tier Betfred League 1 and clawed their way to the Super League – the top-tier of the English leagues. Formerly known as the Hemel Stags, an amateur club in England, the move to become the Ottawa Aces was solidified on Commonwealth Day 2020.

Rugby in Canada expanded when the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) announced the creation of the Ottawa Aces. OSEG, owners of the Ottawa Redblacks and the Ottawa 67s decided that the Aces will follow the traditional red, black, and white colour jerseys as their CFL and OHL cousins. The ownership structure will feature a “26-person ownership group”, unlike their provincial rivals in Toronto, where David Argyle owns a majority stake and reigns as the main decision-maker.

Interestingly, the Rugby Football League now includes a pair of franchises in Canada and France, along with 24 across Wales and England. The league suggests that negotiations are going well for New York to compete in the challenge cup soon too. A relegation system suggests that the RFL can support additional franchises in Canada, perhaps outside of the province of Ontario.

Enjoying the same success on the pitch as the Wolfpack will be a daunting challenge, despite the ownership group’s link to the English league and local athletic connections. The Aces will rely on a wealth of athletic talent from the Ottawa region and southern Quebec, building a local academy system to develop pro rugby players.

Ottawa Aces Starting From the Bottom

The club has already started to offer a guaranteed spot for rugby fans in the Ottawa and Hull region through a program for season tickets. This part of Ontario features an underrated base of sports fans who love contact sports, including hockey, football, and rugby. The Aces will enjoy the good fortune of playing out of the TD Place Stadium at the historic Lansdowne Park, an outstanding location for this fledgling franchise.

For those who are less familiar with this type of rugby, the Rugby Football League has been around since 1895 as an alternative ruleset to Rugby Union. The biggest difference between Rugby League and Union are the number of players on the pitch – 13 for Rugby League and 15 for Rugby Union. However, in terms of worldwide popularity, Rugby Union tends to be a bit more popular and widespread, with the exception of Australia.

Nonetheless, anticipation builds for the Ottawa Aces 2021 debut in League 1, the same spot that the Wolfpack started their journey. The TD Place Stadium is an outstanding venue for football and rugby, adding to the rich tapestry of sports in the National Capital Region. The club is accepting deposits for memberships and has tentatively scheduled tryouts for Fall.

How to Bet On Rugby Games?

There’s a wide variety of betting types when wagering on rugby games, including rugby league and rugby union matchups. One of the most common methods of betting on major rugby competitions such as the Rugby World Cup is through an online sportsbook. Canadian sports fans have the option of accessing many of the most popular online sportsbooks in the world.

The most popular type of bets involves a moneyline wager that predicts the winner of a match. There’s also the option of betting on a point spread and over/unders for point totals. Some sportsbooks will also provide a wide variety of prop bets, such as the first team to score points in a match, or the winners of the first or the second half of the game.

Depending on the variety of options provided for betting on rugby, some online sites will feature futures betting for Super League clubs, such as the outright winner and odds for teams that risk relegation to a lower league. For international tournaments, you can wager on the odds of a country like Canada winning the world cup.

The company doesn’t offer the best range of bonus offers, but they’re considered one of the most reputable in the industry and carry a large range of lines and odds from rugby leagues.
