Who's the next number 1?
Old Time Road has been on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 18 weeks now - many have already tried to push the King of the throne:
Taylor Swift tried and failed.
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello tried and failed.
DJ Khaled tried and - you guessed it - failed.
Billie Eilish, the 17-year-old pop prodigy, has so far got closest to challenging OTR with her single Bad Guy, which trailed OTR on the Spotify Streams Chart on July 20th only by 200.000 plays (5,2 million vs. 5 million).
Who will knock OTR off the top? Let’s take a look:
Lil Nas X himself
Is Old Time Road going to lead to a dead end or will Lil Nas X find another hit? If it’s going to happen, now is the time - his odds for a double are getting higher by the day.
If there’s a coup, King Lil Nas X will be gone from the top of the Hot 100 for good.
Only nine singles have made it to the top of the Hot 100 charts in 2019 and Ariana Grande performs two of those songs (7 Rings and Thank U, Next). In my papers she’s the likeliest heir to the throne.
The last man to replace himself as number 1, Drake, tried failed to beat Old Time Road once already. His 2019 Money in the Grave single debuted at N.o 8 in June, but it failed to produce similar numbers as his own 2018 stuff.
You can be sure that there’s a massive campaign in the making at Camp Swift - she’s got an impressive track record, and a new record coming up. The amount of press that the new number 1 will get would propel her back to the Top 1% of the Top 1% of global pop stars.
She tried it in June already - her single You Need to Calm Down peaked at number 2.
Halsey’s Without Me has already held the top spot of the Hot 100 twice in 2019. If she manages to create something similar, OTR could be in trouble. Her sound fits the autumn colors, so keep your ears pointed at her.
