Kentucky Derby Favorites

Justify 3/1

Mendelssohn 5/1

Magnum Moon 6/1

Audible 8/1

Bolt D’Oro 8/1

Justify and Mendelssohn have impressed bookmakers during the road to the Kentucky Derby, posting blazing speeds during their qualifying victories. Winner of all three career starts, Justify took the Grade I Santa Anita derby to earn top odds, while Mendelssohn’s considered one of the finest Euro thoroughbreds to cross the ocean after winning the UAE Derby and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. European horses rarely win, while Justify must overcome the Apollo curse. Both have the raw power and speed to break through longstanding trends.

Post five – the most successful starting position at the Kentucky Derby – will be occupied by Audible, after this thoroughbred won the Holy Bull Stakes and Florida Derby. Trained by Todd Pletcher, winner of the 2017 derby, Audible might be the best pick to win. Bolt d’Oro receives lots of attention due to superb breeding history and solid performance, but he’s been beaten by Justify, Good Magic and Solomini earlier in the season. Similar to Justify, Magnum Moon will also deal with the Apollo curse.

Kentucky Derby Dark Horses

Good Magic 12/1

Vino Rosso 12/1

Hofburg 20/1

The Kentucky Derby boasts a trio of fine dark horse candidates in 2018. Good Magic defeated Bolt D’Oro and turned the tables on Firenze Fire, winning the Blue Grass Stakes in Keeneland after losing to Firenze in a less prestigious qualifier. He also won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, fulfilling the promise of his father Curlin, who was twice named Horse of the Year.

Vino Rosso turned his season around with a big run at the Aqueduct, winning the Wood Memorial after a couple of disappointing performances. With a record of 4-0-1, Hofberg showed the ability to perform well, but Audible left him in the dust by three lengths at the Florida Derby. Vino Rosso’s comfortable with longer tracks like Churchill Downs, while Good Magic seems a bit underrated, given his success and breeding. Don’t be surprised if Good or Vino land in the money.

Kentucky Derby Longshots

These longshots face tall odds to win for various reasons. Some don’t have the breeding or experience, others lack raw, high-end speed, and many will find the length of the Kentucky Derby an additional challenge. Given the forecast for rain on race day, the most intriguing longshot might be Flameaway, who’s won both starts under wet, muddy conditions. Only two Canadian horses, Northern Dancer and Sunny’s Halo, have won the derby, part of the reason Flameaway features long odds.
