Kentucky Derby Winners

This may not have been the most stellar field, but a quick glance at the Kentucy Derbys of recent memory might reveal that the race was every bit as good as it normally is. The 2016 crop of Triple Crown three year-olds, for example, did not prove to be anything special and outside of American Pharoah and Frosted, the same thing could be said of 2015.

While it's uncertain just how good everyone else was, it seems perfectly clear and legitimate to reach one conclusion after the 2017 renewal: Always Dreaming is pretty darn good. Undefeated in four starts for trainer Todd Pletcher and undefeated in two-turn races, the son of 2012 Derby runner-up Bodemeister vindicated his father's loss in a big way. He handled the crowd, a fast pace and a muddy track. In short, he did what all good horses do by creating his own racing luck.

While well-drawn breaking from post 5, Always Dreaming also found himself inside all of the rest of the speed horses in the race. This put jockey John Velazquez in a tricky spot before the first turn as he was forced to make the decision to either take the lead or tap the brakes and concede the front to the headstrong State of Honor. He chose the tap and wait approach and it was certainly the right move.

Always Dreaming tracked fast early fractions and withstood a stiff challenge from the well-accomplished Irish War Cry entering the final turn. The colt proved to have plenty left for the lengthy stretch run at Churchill Downs and found another gear when Velazquez asked for his very best in a very visually impressive display. The win gave trainer Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher his second Derby score and left little doubt as to who is the best horse in this three-year-old crop.

The morning after the Derby, Pletcher happily reported to assembled media that the colt came out of the race in great shape and would ship to Baltimore for the Preakness sometime in the next few days. The morning line favorite Classic Empire finished fourth after a very troubled trip. Trainer Mark Casse indicated that the Preakness might still be in the cards depending on how the colt bounces back from a swollen eye suffered during the running of the race.

Kentucky Derby Payouts

# Horse Win Place Show
1st Always Dreaming $11.40 $7.20 $5.80
2nd Lookin at Lee   $26.20 $15.20
3rd Battle of Midway     $20.80

As usual, the Kentucky Derby betting generated some large betting payouts in the exotic and multirace bets despite the favorite winning. With longshot Lookin at Lee managing a nice closing run to finish second at 33/1 the $2 exacta returned $336.20 and with 40/1 longshot Battle of Midway churning on for third, the $2 trifecta paid a whopping $16,594.40. Classic Empire rounded out a superfecta that lit up the tote board at an astounding $75,974 for a dollar.

The Pick Three, Pick Four and Pick 5 wagers ending with the Derby also returned handsome profits proving that those who truly fancied Always Dreaming needed to do little more than single the horse and spread deeply in the other races to capitalize exponentially on their investments.
