  • Bet365 co-CEO Denise Coates is believed to be the richest woman in the UK, with a net worth of $10 billion
  • Her annual salary of $423 million makes her the highest-paid CEO in Britain
  • Coates purchased the domain named Bet365 in 2000 and launched the online betting site in 2001

Denise Coates, the billionaire boss of Bet365, who is thought to be the wealthiest woman in Great Britain, literally took a mom and pop operation and turned it into a global business empire. In 1974, her father Peter Coates launched Bet365 as a chain of retail betting shops. A mathematical wizard who earned a degree in the STEM field of Econometrics from Sheffield University, Denise took over as Bet365's managing director in 1995.

Five years later, she took the company in a new direction. Convincing her brother and father to take out a loan with British bank RBS against their brick and mortar betting outlets, Denise Coates arranged to borrow $20.6 million to invest in the development of computer software that would enable the company to launch online. In what Coates termed the ultimate gamble, she purchased the domain name in 2000. In March of 2001, they launched their online betting site.

When Bet365 first launched as an online entity, the company was set up in a portable office building in a car park. By 2005, their operation had proven so successful that they opted to sell their brick and mortar betting shops to rival Coral for $55 million. Denise Coates then used the profit from that sale to pay off the remainder of their bank loan.

Today, Bet365 lists 22 million customers worldwide, including Canada. Bet365's annual revenue exceeds $4 billion. The company is a world leader in the betting industry. Bet365's customers can get action on a wide range of gaming activities such as sports betting, poker, casino, games and bingo.

Considered a pioneer in the online gaming industry, Bet365 is also proving to be a trend-setter as the betting world continues to rapidly evolve. Bet365's menu of live in-play wagering is extensive. You'll be hard-pressed to locate an online betting site with a richer roster of live betting options. They are constantly updating their variety of casino games, and feature some of the newest and most popular slot games in the online casino world.

Bet365 is always quick to adapt when there's a game-changing development in the industry. Such was the case with advances in mobile technology. Denise Coates saw how the evolution of smartphones could impact betting and Bet365 was among the frontrunners when it came to developing a mobile app. Today, Bet365 handles more than 70 percent of its bets via mobile devices.

People close to Denise Coates believe that her life in the industry has granted her a vast advantage over CEOs of other major betting sites whose experience comes from businesses other than gambling.

She began working at her father's betting shops while still in high school. That frontline interaction with the players gained her an innate understanding of the bettor. Since taking charge of the company, Coates has changed Bet365's approach to be more bettor-oriented, built around a philosophy that customer service is paramount.

This viewpoint is also evident in Bet365's advertising. Coates has utilized popular everyman-type actors such as Ray Winstone and Samuel L. Jackson to be the face of their product.

    Still A Homebody

Even though Bet365 has grown into a global giant in the betting industry, Denise Coates and her family remain firmly rooted in their hometown of Stoke-on-Trent. Bet365 is still headquartered there, the city's No. 1 employer with more than 4,600 people working for them.

In 2006, the Coates family, through a Bet365 subsidiary company, purchased their local pro soccer team Stoke City FC for $2.3 million. Denise's father Peter Coates serves as chairman of the club, just as he is chairman of Bet365.

Denise Coates, her husband Richard Smith and their five children - four of them adopted - make their home on a sprawling lakeside estate in Cheshire, about 30 miles northwest of Stoke-on-Trent, which is valued at $124 million.
