Canadian Beach Volleyballers Are Solid Olympic Medal Bets

Canada has never won an Olympic medal in women's beach volleyball. That is all expected to change at the Tokyo Summer Games. Since teaming up in the spring of 2017, Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan have been one of the top teams on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. In 2019, they made history as Canada’s first-ever world champions in beach volleyball. They're also among the favourites to win a medal in Tokyo.

Canadian Volleyballers Favourites to Win Medals

  • Canada's Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan are of to a 2-0 start in the Olympic women's beach volleyball competition at the Tokyo Summer Games
  • Humana-Paredes and Pavan are a 6.00-second betting choice to win the gold medal
  • The Brazilian tandem of Agatha and Duda are the 4.80 gold-medal favourites

Not only hasn't a Canadian woman ever stepped on an Olympic podium to collect a medal following the beach volleyball competition, but Canada also hasn't ever finished among the top four places since the sport was welcomed into the Olympic program in 1996.

That all figures to change in Tokyo. Humana-Paredes and Pavan are the top seeds in the event. Pavan and Humana-Parades own a 75-28 (72.82%) record during the Olympic qualifying period. That includes a 35-17 (67.31%) mark against teams with Olympic experience.

Pavan has previous Olympic playing experience. Paired with Heather Bansley, they finished fifth at Rio. Working in tandem with Humana-Paredes, this duo has proven dynamic. Along with their world championship win, they finished fifth on the FIVB world tour

Oddsmakers have established this Canadian team as the second choice in Olympic betting to win the gold medal at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. Pavan and Humana-Paredes are listed as the 6.00-second betting choice in the Olympic women's beach volleyball odds.

Off To Strong Start

Humana-Paredes and Pavan are off to an impressive 2-0 start in pool play at the Tokyo Olympiad. In their opening match, Pavan and Humana-Paredes defeated the Dutch duo of Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon 2-0. The Canadians won in straight sets 21-16, 21-14.

The reigning world champs followed up that performance with another straight-set triumph. It was a 21-17, 21-14 win during their second match of the tournament against Julia Sude and Karla Borger of Germany.

Since teaming up, they've been building toward this objective. At the end of 2019, Humana-Paredes and Pavan were named the FIVB Most Outstanding Female Beach Volleyball Team. Humana-Paredes was also named the FIVB's Best Defensive Player and Best Setter, the latter for the second straight year.

In their first four seasons together, Pavan and Humana-Paredes earned 11 podium finishes on the FIVB World Tour, including victories at five-star events in Porec (2017), Gstaad (2018), and Vienna (2019). In 2017, they posted fourth-place finishes at the FIVB World Championships and World Tour Finals, after which Humana-Paredes was recognized as the Most Improved Player on the FIVB World Tour.

Brazilians Are Dominant

If the Canadians are to enjoy a golden moment, then they'll never overcome the gold standard in women's beach volleyball. Brazil has won a record seven Olympic medals in the sport.

The Brazilian tandem of Agatha Bednarzcuk and Eduarda "Duda" Santos Lisboa is the 4.80 gold-medal favourites in the Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball odds. Agatha and Duda have posted podium finishes in five of seven tournaments so far this season. That includes a pair of victories. They are #1 in the FIVB world rankings. Yet they come to Tokyo as the third seed in the Olympic tournament.

At 38, Agatha is the veteran of this tandem. She won a silver medal in Rio paired with Barbara Seixas. Agatha and Duda became a team in 2017, the year after the Rio Summer Games.

Duda, 22, is the rising star of the sport. She's won four World Tour events and reached 13 podiums. Duda was voted the FIVB Top Rookie in 2016. She won a gold medal at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.
