Breeders' Cup Classic 2017 Betting Cheat Sheet

Breeders' Cup Classic 2017 Betting Cheat Sheet

The BC Classic 2017

Like so many major stakes races on dirt in southern California, the 2017 Breeders' Cup Classic will run through trainer Bob Baffert. The Hall of Fame conditioner will saddle 4 of the 11 runners in the field - all of them Grade 1 stakes winners. Arrogate, who drew the rail post, is the chief among the quartet having won the 2016 Classic, but he was beaten on the square in his last start by stablemate Collected over the same Del Mar track which plays host to the Breeders' Cup this year.

Baffert's other two runners are the veteran Mubtaahij and three year-old West Coast who won the Awesome Again and Travers Stakes respectively in their last starts - both grade 1 races.

As good a hand as Baffert holds, however, Gun Runner is the horse to beat. The Steve Asmussen trainee won the Stephen Foster, Woodward and Whitney Stakes in succession over the summer, defeating top older males from around the country in dominant fashion.

The Betting Lines

  • Gun Runner (+160)
  • Collected (+550)
  • Churchill (+1600)
  • Diversify (+2500)
  • Pavel (+3300)
  • Gunnevera (+4000)
  • Win The Space (+6600)
  • Arrogate (+225)
  • West Coast (+550)
  • Mubtaahij (+2000)
  • Cupid (+3300)
  • War Decree (+3300)
  • War Story (+6600)

In looking for a short-price favorite to toss, it may be Arrogate. The four year-old sensation will be making his final career start and was thought to be invincible following his wins in the Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup in early 2017.

But no horse is invincible and Arrogate certainly seemed a shadow of his former self this summer, losing the San Diego Handicap and Pacific Classic despite being heavily favored. Both those races were at Del Mar, so it appears Arrogate may not be fond of the surface or just isn't the same freakish horse racing fans saw beat California Chrome at Santa Anita in last year's Classic.

All signs point to Gun Runner who just doesn't seem to have any chinks in the armor. This horse is fast, consistent and seems to run his race regardless of where he ships. The only question mark for Gun Runner is how he will handle the quirky Del Mar surface.

On this note, Collected has already answered that question with authority winning the Pacific Classic against a top field in August. Handicappers can get creative with their opinions, but there's no doubt this race runs through Gun Runner, Arrogate and Collected.
