Boxing Schedule: Your Guide To The Best Upcoming Fights

Boxing Schedule: Your Guide To The Best Upcoming Fights

Upcoming Boxing Fights

Boxing enthusiasts are in for a treat the next months as a litany of top-level fights are lined and scheduled. It begins with a welterweight clash between Terence Crawford and Jeff Horn in Las Vegas punctuated by a classic cruiserweight tilt between Oleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev some time in July. We break down four of the best upcoming boxing fights.

Terence Crawford vs Jeff Horn

When: June 9

Arguably the best pound-for-pound boxer today, Crawford (-1091) will take on the Australian equivalent of Rocky in Horn (+550). Crawford is unbeaten at 32-0 with 23 KOs while Horn is also perfect at 18-0-1 with 12 KOs though many thought he lost against Pacquiao two fights ago.

Crawford is everything you want in a prizefighter: quick, powerful, and can switch stances. Most importantly, he is confident and great at breaking down his opponents even before the first bell has rung. Horn is a bit of a deceiver. He isn't that athletic but is elusive, durable, and has incredible heart.

This fight will be at welterweight and Horn is the slightly bigger fighter though Crawford will have the reach advantage. Horn will be aggressive as always but he is seriously outmatched here. Crawford should win easily whether it's by a 12-round clinic or a late mercy stoppage.

Terence Crawford (-1091)

George Groves vs Callum Smith

When:July 14

The biggest boxing fight in the UK this summer pits top-ranked super middleweight George Groves (-156) against fellow Brit and rising star Callum Smith (+126). Groves is 28-3 with 20 KOs while Smith is perfect at 24-0 with 17 KOs. A recent injury to Groves has many questioning if he'll be at peak ability but he'll enter as a slight favourite no less.

Groves is the more skilled and experienced boxer though he will be visibly smaller. At 5'11" with a 72" reach, Groves will look like a weight class or two below Smith who is 6'3" with a 78" reach. But this can work to his advantage as he'll be faster and harder to hit. Groves is both a volume and power puncher and having a big target in Smith is a boon.

Smith is relatively untested and there are still doubts about his endurance though he went all 12 rounds in his last two bouts. He can win using his size and reach advantage by fighting Groves at angles that favour him or he can body up on Groves and fight him on the inside.

Groves will have the advantage based on speed and skill but wait for more confirmation on his shoulder and for now, back the underdog who will take the fight to Groves and win a hard-fought victory.

Callum Smith (+126)

Lucas Martin Matthysse v Manny Pacquiao

When: July 14

The Fighting senator of the Philippines returns eager to prove he still has plenty left in the tank. Pacquiao (-222) is 39 and is coming off a controversial defeat to Horn. He's fighting another also-ran in Matthysse (+175). The 35-year-old is also looking to keep himself relevant and has rattled off two straight KO victories.0

Pacquiao's overall record is 59-7-2 with 38 KOs but he hasn't finished anyone in almost a decade. Matthysse has a 39-4-1 record with 36 KOs. It's speed and skill versus size and power although the disparity isn't that significant. Pacquiao is old but he still has a lot of mobility. Punch-for-punch, he's the faster of the two. But Matthysse can end him with a well-placed shot.

It's hard to bank on either guy because they're both at the twilight of their careers and in Pacquiao's case, he'll be fighting without longtime coach Freddie Roach. But he should still win this fight barring another bogus decision. Pacquiao is faster and has better endurance and will outlast the Argentinian.

Manny Pacquiao (-222)

Oleksandr Usyk vs Murat Gassiev

When: TBD July

The top cruiserweights collide for the vacant title as #1-ranked Usyk (-305) faces his toughest test in #2-ranked Gassiev (+226). Both boxers couldn't be more different: Usyk is a fleet-footed craftsman who boxes southpaw while Gassiev is a power-punching orthodox boxer who is constantly looking for the big shot.

Usyk might be the best Ukrainian outside this chap named Lomachenko. At 31, he is unbeaten at 14-0 with 11 KOs and has been fighting pro only since 2013. He won a gold medal in the 2012 Olympic games. The Russian is much younger at 24 but has almost twice the victories with 26 (19 KOs).

Fights of this magnitude at this weight class don't come around often and we have the consensus two best cruiserweights squaring off. Either fighter could knock the other out but Usyk gets the edge in a close contest using his speed and footwork to outpoint Gassiev in what could be the first fight of a trilogy.

Oleksandr Usyk (-305)
