Boxing Predictions: Anthony Joshua vs Carlos Takam

Boxing Predictions: Anthony Joshua vs Carlos Takam

Anthony Joshua vs Carlos Takam Fight Card

Joshua was already a -3000 favourite against Kubrat Pulev and now has to squash the late replacement in Takam. It goes without saying that Joshua (-10000) is the superior fighter in every facet. The 28-year-old Brit is now the boxing world's biggest superstar at heavyweight following his 11-round classic against former stalwart Wladimir Klitschko.

Takam (+1200) is not exactly a journeyman but isn't a contender either. He's coming off a two-round KO of Croatian journeyman Ivica Bacurin and is stepping up in 12-days notice.

The Frenchie will be at a major disadvantage in every facet of the match but it's still the fight game and he has a "puncher's chance" with 27 of his 35 victories coming via knockout. Joshua knows better than to overlook the diminutive Takam but only rockstars will find betting value here.

      Anthony Joshua vs Carlos Takam

By defeating Klitschko, Joshua cemented himself as the real deal. Heading into the fight, the questions regarding Joshua were his endurance and his competition.

The Brit carries a 100% KO ratio but had only defeated journeymen and unknowns. He had only fought past the third round twice and it only went until the seventh. Against Klitschko, Joshua passed the test with flying colours.

Joshua showed poise and patience throughout the fight. He was dropped by Klitschko, his first career knockdown but stormed right back to put away the legendary Ukrainian.

Joshua had to dig deep and get a second wind in the tenth and this was all the evidence his critics needed to join in on the hype. Joshua not only had the youth and athleticism but also the mentality of a long-reigning boxing champion. And he's only been in it for four years.

Takam can be criticized for a lot of things: his inability to beat top-tier competition like Joseph Parker and Alexander Povetkin, his age, and his physical inferiority, but he'll never be criticized for his durability. Takam has only been finished once in his 39 pro fights. It will take Joshua a while to wear down the granite-chinned Frenchman and maybe Takam lands a shot that hurts Joshua.

That may be a reach. Takam's only hope to beat Joshua is by landing that one punch. As Mike Tyson said, "everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."

But this also applies to him. Joshua is a finesse boxer, which can make it seem like he's not landing hard punches when he is. Once Joshua breaks out of the warm-up phase, he'll come for Takam and the overmatched challenger may relent.

There is no point betting on either fighter. Joshua is overpriced and Takam is undervalued. Instead, players can try prop betting. These are side bets that add extra conditions to cut the price down. For instance, a bet on Joshua to win by T/KO is at -961, still a steep value but far better than his regular price tag.

Alternatively, betting on when Joshua wins can be profitable. Betting on him to win within the first three rounds is at +254 or in the last three rounds at +1400. Depending on your sportsbook, these odds change. Visit all the online sportsbooks available to Canadians to see what odds they offer for the fight. It's advisable to use more than one book especially when most offer credits as a signup bonus.

Joshua vs Takam Best Bets - October 28, 2017

The undercard of Joshua and Takam features a handful of bettable fights beginning with Irish boxing phenom, Katie Taylor (-10000). Like Joshua, she is expected to run through Argentinian Anahi Esther (+1600). Taylor is the bigger and more skilled boxer and this is squash fight matchmaking at its finest.

A prop bet on Taylor to win by T/KO is only at -250.

Dillian Whyte (-456) will be the co-main event against Finnish-Swedish standout Robert Helenius (+301). Whyte's only loss came against Joshua and if he can control his temper, this should be a cakewalk for him. Helenius on the flipside is cold and calculating but is physically outmatched.

Whyte to win by T/KO is only -149, a real value.

Main Card (DAZN Canada, 1 PM ET)

        • Anthony Joshua (-10000) vs Carlos Takam (+1200) for the IBF heavyweight title
