Boxing: Joshua vs Povetkin

Joshua Will Rally Against Dangerous Povetkin

Odds indicate another easy win for Anthony Joshua (-812) but Alexander Povetkin (+476) is no pushover. The Russian has only lost to Wladimir Klitschko and has finished 24 of his 34 victories. Should Joshua lose focus for even a second, Povetkin could pull off this year's biggest upset.

Joshua is coming off a decision victory over Joseph Parker, the first time he hasn't finished a fight while Povetkin is fresh off a knockout of David Price.

For Joshua, the first fight that comes to mind is the Carlos Takam fight. The Cameroonian-Frenchman was also a stocky heavyweight with knockout power who Joshua towered over. Despite his TKO win, Joshua had a hard time putting away Takam. Povetkin has never been knocked out and is superior to Takam.

Povetkin also fought and finished Takam but he did it in more impressive fashion: a clean knockout victory as opposed to a premature referee stoppage. At 39, Povetkin is nearing the end of his career but hasn't sustained much damage even when he absorbed four knockdowns from Klitschko.

As the challenger, Povetkin will take the fight to Joshua and attack him on the inside. He will bob his way past Joshua's long jabs and punish the Brit in the body. He has a mean hook that is a potential fight-ender.

Boxing Odds: Joshua vs Povetkin Trends & Tidbits

The money has come in separate directions. Initially, there were huge bets for the champion, Joshua. But most bets have come in for the challenger, Povetkin recently. More big bets could be coming as the fight draws nearer.

  • Joshua opened at -1100 and his line has been bet up by 0.3% since
  • Povetkin opened at +600 and his line has been bet down by 11.8% since
  • Joshua has won by knockout in four of his last five fights
  • Povetkin has won by knockout in three of his last five fights
  • Both boxers have never been knocked out

Povetkin will give Joshua his toughest test. He is the best boxer the young champion will have faced. His combination of toughness, power, and craftiness at using his size disadvantage will give Joshua plenty of trouble. But the Brit isn't undefeated for no reason. And he'll add another feather in his cap here.

Prediction: Povetkin has never been knocked out but there is a first time for everything. He will be most dangerous in the first six rounds and could even lead the fight at this point. His aggression and ability to evade plenty of Joshua's outside shots will work in his favour until Joshua finally gets a bead on him. Once Joshua starts to feel him out, he'll open up and hurt Povetkin enough for the ref to call a T/KO.
