2019 Australian Open

Will Nadal Play?

Before making predictions on who will win the 2019 Australian Open, we should talk about Rafael Nadal. After his best year since 2013, Rafael Nadal had a small surgery on his ankle. He has returned to the court giving him roughly a month to get back into playing shape.

Nadal needs to be 100% healthy to have any chance at the Australian Open. Nadal has only one title at the Australian Open, coming all the way back in 2009. Since 2009, Nadal made the Finals three times, losing each time (most recently to Roger Federer in 2017).

Nadal’s odds of winning the tournament (+503) rank second to Novak Djokovic. However, with his health and history at the tournament, the value on Nadal winning just is not there.

Best Bet to Win the Men’s Australian Open

The odds-on favourite to win the 2019 Australian Open is Novak Djokovic at +130. Djokovic is tied with Federer and Roy Emerson for the most Australian Open titles in history with six. When Djokovic makes it to the finals, he is undefeated.

With the health of Nadal a concern and Federer’s age (37), this tournament is Djokovic’s to lose.

Djokovic’s won 88% of his matches at the Australian Open (61-8) and had made it further than the second round at 11 of the last 12 tournaments.

The value on Djokovic is the biggest hindrance on betting on him to win. Rarely is someone so heavily favoured to win a major in tennis, but with the field outside the top three (Djokovic, Nadal and Federer) always unpredictable betting on Djokovic is the best strategy.

Pick: Novak Djokovic to win the Australian Open (+130)

Best Bet to Win the Women’s Australian Open

The women’s side of the Australian Open is considerably more open, with 12 players having +1800 odds or better to win the tournament (compared to only five on the men’s side). Serena Williams’ opens as the favourite at +445.

While Serena is still the best player in the world, last year’s runner-up Simona Halep (+825) is the best bet to win Melbourne.

Caroline Wozniacki bet Simona Halep, in arguably the most competitive finals since Serena beat her sister Venus back in 2003. However, unlike the men’s side of the tournament, the runner-up from the previous year has a history of winning (do so three times since 2007).

Halep is coming a year where she won her first Grand Slam (the 2018 French Open), helping her secure the year-end no. 1 ranking for a second straight year.

At 27, Halep is entering her prime years. She is coming off the best year of her career, despite a slow finish to the season, and she should start 2019 off with the second Major of her career.

Pick: Simona Halep to win the Australian Open (+825)

Best Underdog in the Men’s Bracket

As is the case in the majority of men’s tournaments, everyone is an underdog outside of the big three stars (although Alexander Zverev has climbed into the conversation at +800). Looking at the field of competitors at this year’s tournament, the best underdog to bet is last year’s runner-up Marin Cilic.

History is not necessarily on the side of Cilic. The last time the runner-up at the Australian Open won the following year was back in 1963. Still, it has happened once, and with Nadal dealing with injuries and Federer’s age always a point of conversation, the door is open for someone new to win.

Cilic is 26-10 lifetime at the tournament and was oh-so-close to winning last year (losing in five sets to Federer). Consider him one of the best underdogs to win the championship in 2019.

Pick: Marin Cilic (+2200) to win the Australian Open

Best Underdog in the Women’s Bracket

Looking at every woman at the Australian Open, the nod for the best underdog to win goes to Julia Gorges. Gorges cracked the top-ten of the world rankings last year.

Of the four Majors, Gorges has her most wins and best winning percentage (16-10, 61.5%) at the Australian Open.

Gorges is offering good value at +3900. While it is always hard to predict an underdog at any tennis tournament, hedging some of the favourites with Gorges is a fine betting strategy.

Pick: Julia Gorges (+3900) to win the Australian Open
