2018 Breeders Cup Turf Sprint

      2018 Breeders Cup Turf Sprint

The 2018 BC Turf Sprint should present all the usual complexities and challenges. Run at five furlongs this year over the Churchill Downs lawn, the early speed should be blistering and the right trip will be crucial. You simply can’t go break-neck up front or hang too far back, or go too wide. It’s all costly in the end.

      Contenders and shots

With the field established and posts drawn, Disco Partner is a lukewarm and unappealing +350 according to the future odds posted. That’s a big no-thanks for me. While I respect the big gray horse and the work he’s done sprinting over the turf, this race is a bit short for him.

Let’s dig into the picks in a moment, but here are the rest of the odds:

      • Disco Partner +350
      • Stormy Liberal +400
      • World of Trouble +600
      • Buchero +800
      • Conquest Tsunami +800
      • Havana Grey +1000
      • Lost Treasure +1000
      • Richard’s Boy +1400
      • Chanteline +1600
      • Rainbow Heir +1600
      • Will Call +1600
      • Hembree +2000
      • Ruby Notion +2000
      • El Astronaute+2500
      • Extravagant Kid +2500
      • Pay Any Price +2500
      • Vision Perfect +2500
      • B Squared +3300
      • Blind Ambition +3300
      • Insta Irma +3300

With the offerings so robust in this field, a handicapper looking for a square price wouldn’t have to get very creative. It’s also worth noting that a few runners on this list are not among the 15 runners who will actually contest this race. Blind Ambition, B Squared, El Astronaute, and Pay Any Price will not suit up. In other words, don’t bet them.

      Final thoughts

The BC Turf Sprint is always a tough read. I will try to look for a horse that has run a Beyer Speed Figure of at least 100-plus in two of its last three starts, and one that can lay close to quarter and half miles splits of say 21/44. Outside posts are always good things too, but not too far outside.

World of Trouble +600 will start from post 11 and seems a reasonable representation of this criteria. He’ll also enter the Breeders’ Cup Turf in sharp form having won his last two starts. Those looking for a little more value may find Richard’s Boy an attractive play at +1400. This horse was a close second in this race last year and always seems to step up when there is big money on the line.
