2018 Breeders Cup Juvenile
Most of the online racebooks have a short list of Juvenile contenders led by trainer Bob Baffert’s undefeated Game Winner. Regardless of where you look, the talented two year-old is valued at around +175 in the futures market. 3 for 3 so far with wins in the Del Mar Futurity and American Pharoah Stakes, Game Winner is legit, but the certainty of him being overbet is enough to make me look elsewhere.
If I sound like a broken record, then let that record spin one more time. A bettor making a future wager has to be value-minded above all else. For the same reasons that I won’t be playing Game Winner, I’ll also be ignoring the Chad Brown-trained Complexity, who is 2 for 2 and won the Champagne Stakes last-out. Valued at +350 on the futures line, Complexity’s talent and high-profile connections make him equally unplayable.
Here’s a look at the top contenders future odds:
- Game Winner +175
- Complexity +350
- Mind Control +800
- Endorsed +1000
- Gunmetal Gray +1000
- Tale of the Union +1800
- Mucho +1800
- Rowayton +1600
- Strive Siler +3300
- Unionizer +5000
So who gets my cash? Without question, the list here is incomplete, lacking obvious contenders such as Standard Deviation, Code of Honor, and King for a Day to name a few. Fortunately, bookmakers allow bets on such contenders “upon request.” Request I shall.
Going with the also-eligibles
Depending on how juicy the odds are, I’m really intrigued by the trio of Standard Deviation, Code of Honor and King for a Day. All have shown promise, and all would be excellent bets at greater than +2000.
Code of Honor, in particular, is a contender to watch. Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey will saddle this up-and-comer who ran a deceptively great race after stumbling from the starting gate in the Champagne and running second behind the aforementioned Complexity. With a better start and a bit more seasoning, he’s a dangerous contender who isn’t getting much attention from bettors.
The same could be said of Standard Deviation, who is considered Chad Brown’s lesser-talented contender. I’m keeping a close eye on headlines and media comments to ensure this guy runs, but his wide trip in the Breeders’ Cup Futurity and subequent rally to be third was much better than it looks on paper.
