2018 Breeders Cup Distaff
Monomoy Girl is a pretty spectacular filly and the deserving favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Those concessions made, she’s offers absolutely no betting value at the suprisingly short odds of +150 (bet $100 to win $150) in the future’s market.
The same could actually be said of the second and third betting choices in the Distaff - Abel Tasman(+350) and Midnight Bisou (+400). Abel Tasman was particularly flat in her final prep race, finishing fifth in the Zenyatta Stakes. To put it mildly, it’s hard to understand why she’s still such a short price.
Here’s a look at the current betting odds for the Distaff a few weeks before the race. Personally, I’m salivating.
- Monomoy Girl +150
- Abel Tasman +350
- Midnight Bisou +400
- Eskimo Kisses +1400
- Red Ruby +1400
- Wonder Gadot +1600
- Blue Prize +1400
- Paradise Woods +2500
- Moonshine Memories +2500
As a bettor, you have an obligation to go in with both fists when you feel the top three betting choices in a race are either unlikely winners or offer extremely poor wagering value. In essence I think two of the top three in the Distaff are unlikely to win and I feel that all three are overbet.”
Eyes on the Prize
I’m astounded that a horse with Blue Prize’s resume and ability is being offered at the hefty price of +1400. Blue Prize has won three graded stakes races in a row, including a very impressive last-out score in the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland.
Trained by the under-the-radar Ignacio Correas, Blue Prize has been a model of consistency, running first or second in 8 of her last 10 starts, most of which have come against top-class company. To boot, this five year-old mare loves Churchill Downs, where she has already captured two stakes races.
In short, I’ll be betting enthusiastically at this price, and you should too. Time to load up those betting deposits and let it ride.
