2018 Australian Open Odds: Third Round Best Value Picks
Australian Open Second Round Recap
Britain's best hope Johanna Konta came into the event as the ninth seed, but she too bit the dust against American Bernarda Pera. Prior to the tournament, the 23 year-old was ranked 123rd in the world, a whopping 113 places below the favourite in this one.
In total there were eight seeded players eliminated from the women's draw in the second round. Konta and Muguruza joined Anastasija Sevastova, Elena Vesnina, Daria Gavrilova, Julia Gorges, Daria Kasatkina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on the scrap heap, meaning just fourteen of the original 32 seeded players remain. It really will be anyone's championship this year.
Over in the men's draw, third seed Grigor Dimitrov survived a huge scare by defeating American Mackenzie McDonald in five sets. The Bulgarian looked on track after three sets then inexplicably lost the fourth set 6-0, before turning it around in an 8-6 fifth.
Fifteenth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was pushed to five sets against Canada's Denis Shapovalov, although ultimately prevailed. The result along with Eugenie Bouchard's straight sets loss to Simona Halep means that there are no more Canadians left in the draw.
Fifth seed Dominic Thiem went down two sets before recovering to win his match, although seventh seed Belgian David Goffin was not so lucky, losing in four sets to Julien Benneteau. It means that seventeen of the original seeds remain in the men's draw.
In summary, the top six men's seeds are still in contention, as well as Novak Djokovic, who was seeded fourteenth due to his recent injury issues. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are yet to lose a set at the tournament. Six of the top ten women remain, including Halep and Caroline Wozniacki, while former winner Angelique Kerber is also in the hunt.
The third round gets underway on Friday, January 19th, and there are several key matchups to look forward to. Below we take a look at the top fixtures, followed by our predictions and more betting tips to help you win big at the Australian Open.
Men's Tournament Third Round Singles Picks
Top seeds Rodger Federer, Rafael Nadal Grigor Dimitrov and Dominic Thiem will all play seeded players in the third round, which means that their odds will be far more valuable than we've seen in the first couple of rounds. Mind you, Rafael Nadal is paying -5000 in his clash against Damir Dzumhir, so we're going to leave that alone. Below are the best matches from the third round and our fearless predictions:Grigor Dimitrov (3) vs Andrey Rublev (30) Dimitrov @ -262
This could be the match of the round. Rublev has battled hard in his two matches so far, playing in a five set epic against David Ferrer and another tough one against Marcos Baghdatis. It's interesting to note that he is yet to be broken; his three lost sets have all gone to tiebreakers. Dimitrov was given a huge scare in his last match, and both players will have heavy legs when this one gets underway. In another close encounter, we expect Dimitrov to have too much in the tank for Rublev, who has played extremely well to get to this point.Nick Kyrgios (17) vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (15) Kyrgios @ -286
Kyrgios has enjoyed two victories in straight sets, and will go into this match as the favourite despite Tsonga being ahead in the seedings. Tsonga is coming off a tough five set match and will struggle to cope with the Australian, who is looking more focussed and less bratty than we've ever seen him. Kyrgios is bound for the second week, and we are confident he will win this one.Tomas Berdych (19) vs Juan Martin Del Potro (12) Berdych @ +111
This one looks to be a five-setter, and it will be great to see the two big men going head to head. Both players went to four sets in their second round clashes, although should be fresh for an encounter that will feature plenty of aces. There are cases for both players to win this one, but we are going to put our money on the Czech veteran to get it done here.
Wome's Tournament Third Round Singles Picks
As expected, the women's draw is wide open after a number of top sets bit the dust in the opening rounds. There are still a number of talented players left in the pack, and below we highlight the top matches:Ashleigh Barty (18) vs Naomi Osaka Barty @ -303
Although a pretty hefty favourite, we can't leave out Australia's last woman standing, and she is a lock for a win in the third round to set up a mouth-watering clash with Simona Halep. Despite losing the first set in her second round match, Barty was controlled and composed in her come-from-behind victory, and looking to be the clear winner in this battle.Lauren Davis vs Simona Halep Halep @ -357*
*In straight sets
Just like she did against Canada's Eugenie Bouchard, we are expecting Simona Halep to make light work of her American opponent in the third round. Head to head, Halep is priced at -1250, yet she is paying -357 for the straight-sets victory. It's not going to make you too much cash, but it would make a great parlay with the Ashleigh Barty selection.Maria Sharapova vs Angelique Kerber (21) Kerber @ -147
Undoubtedly the match of the round, two former winners will go head to head in a fixture that could well have been a semi-final. Sharapova is defying the odds in her return after her controversial drugs admission, while Kerber is looking to be in the form that took her to the title in 2016. Although she has slipped in the rankings, we feel that Kerber is going to be the stronger in this battle.
More Betting Tips
Don't forget that you can also pick the number of sets required for victory in all Australian Open matches (as seen above in our pick for the Halep/Davis match.
While one of the top players may not be worthwhile betting on because of their overwhelming superiority and low return potential, taking on the number of sets may be a useful pick. There are more options available in the mens draw as they play five sets, although it's not uncommon for women's matches to go to three sets even when the top seeds are involved.
You could also try your luck by checking out the over/under market. This is much more difficult to predict, and as such the reward is much greater. Your options may include betting on the total number of games in a set or total number of games in a match, which again is easier if you are watching the match and betting live. There will always be the option of betting on the exact score of a set. This is actually not as difficult as it sounds as there are only a handful of different possibilities, so why not have a punt on this in the next match you put your money on.
Betting on the Australian Open is easier than ever, and with so many companies vying for your betting cash there are always a number of exciting deals on the table. Make sure you explore our sportsbook partners and check out all of the different options available.
