2015 CFL Team Previews: Calgary Looks for Rare Grey Cup Repeat

2015 CFL Team Previews: Calgary Looks for Rare Grey Cup Repeat

The Stampeders won the Grey Cup last season and the last time a team won back-to-back cups was in 2009-2010 when Montreal pulled off the feat.

Most Significant Offseason Changes

Calgary did not make many off-season moves, why would they since they won it all last season, but they had a solid draft with some possible steals and they locked up their two quarterbacks with new deals for Bo Levi Mitchell and Drew Tate. The two player losses that could hurt are Stanley Bryant and Brett Jones, who were both all stars last season.

They’ll Be Successful If…

They can stay healthy and not be comfortable just winning the Grey Cup last season.
Since the 1982 season only two teams have won back-to-back Grey Cups and while the Stampeders have the talent to do it again it is never easy to repeat. Last season Calgary scored the most points in the CFL and they gave up the second fewest. Mitchell had a great season passing for the fifth most yards and had 22 TD and only eight INT. He has a very deep WR corps and it is interesting that only one Calgary wide receiver  ranked in the top 20 in receiving yards last season.

Can Jon Cornish have another great season as the running back for Calgary? He did not play in all the games last season, but still had his second straight 1,000-yard season. He has to stay healthy, especially in the playoffs, and lead the backfield once again. The defense should be solid again with 10 of 12 returning starters.

They’ll Be Unsuccessful If…

The rebuilt offensive line struggles and Cornish gets injured. On top of that Mitchell has to have a repeat performance of last season when he was solid in limiting picks and mistakes on his way to the Grey Cup MVP. The defense does return almost all of the starters, but the one loss that may haunt them is Shawn Lemon, who forced eight fumbles and had 13 sacks. On top of that seven starters that return are all over the age of 30

Cornish missed nine games last season due to injury and he is no longer a spring chicken. His workload will be monitored this season and while he is key Mitchell has a lot of pressure on him after last season’s sterling campaign.

2015 Draft Tracker

1. Lavoie, Karl OL Laval
2. Durant, Lemar WR Simon Fraser
3. Varga, Tyler RB Yale
3. Campbell, Tevaughn DB Regina
3. Langlais, William FB Sherbrooke
5. Janke, Dexter DB Saskatchewan
6. Picton, Aaron OL Regina
7. Buckley, Andrew QB Calgary

Outlook

There will be a drop off for the Stampeders this season, but not by much. Their main rival in the West is Edmonton and while they won all four games facing the Eskimos last season that will not happen this season. Edmonton has a great defense and they will make the turn this season to be the best in the West. However, Calgary will not be far behind and they have all the tools to be a legit contender to repeat as Grey Cup champions.

Prediction: Second In West Division
