NHL Week 5 Picks, Odds and Live Scores

National Hockey League 2016-17 Week 5 Preview

Still not seeing much separation between the contenders and pretenders, four weeks into the 2016-17 NHL schedule, most teams are still chock-full of Stanley Cup Championship aspirations. Week 4 did see the fall of the last undefeated squad as Montreal was crushed 10-0 crushing by the up and coming Columbus Blue Jackets. The Canadiens bounced back the next night with a hard-fought 5-4 win over Philadelphia and the Habs still lead the NHL with 21 points. The Rangers and Penguins sit second and third - one and three points out of first place in the Eastern Conference. Edmonton and Chicago are tied as Western Conference leaders with 19 points while St. Louis is three points back in third place. Entering NHL Week 5 action, the Blueshirts are running hot with five wins in a row while the Canucks have gone stone cold during an eight-game losing skid after their 4-0 start.

NHL Week 5 Predictions

Buffalo Sabres @ Boston Bruins – Bet Buffalo +1.5 (-200) Puck Line at Bodog (Boston 4-0 Final)

My Team's Next MatchBuffalo Sabres

TD Garden Arena - Boston, Massachusetts 7:00 PM ET Monday, November 7, 2016

We are jumping right into our NHL Week 5 predictions with a look at the LIVE odds and preview the Boston vs Buffalo battle. The Bruins (6-5) are playing a second home game after they were soundly thumped 5-2 by the New York Rangers on Saturday. Prior to that, Boston had won three in a row on the road over the Lightning (4-3 SO) Panthers (2-1) and Red Wings (1-0). In a seemingly endless “rebuilding” phase, Buffalo (5-4-2) is beginning to gain a competitive edge as they are off to their best start since opening with a 6-5-0 record five years ago. After a rough 1-3-2 start, a 2-1 home loss to Toronto last Thursday is the only blemish during the Sabres 4-1-0 recent run. Buffalo has played sound defense, while scoring just enough, to best their opponents by a combined 11-4 final count over their last five matches. In the goaltending matchup, Robin Lehner (4-3-1 GAA 2.14) is the confirmed starter for Buffalo while Tuukka Rask (6-1-0 GAA 1.98) is expected to mind the net for Boston. One goal has decided five of the last seven meetings between these teams. Take the +1.5 (-200) puck line posted at the world-famous Bodog sportsbook and side with the Sabres.

Boston Bashes Buffalo: This one stung a bit. Tuukka Rask was rock solid, stopping all 32 shots he faced, and Boston scored three power play goals as the Bruins shutout the Buffalo Sabres 4-0 at TD Garden Arena. Boston doubled their output with an extra skater as they entered this contest with just three goals during their first 43 power play attempts this season. We were still confident in the Sabres after a scoreless first period but Buffalo was tagged with four consecutive penalties in the second frame. Boston made them pay with a pair of PP goals and they put the Sabres away with three scores in the second period. Our NHL season record drops to 3-1 but we will look to get back on the winning track when we preview and predict the Red Wings vs Canucks clash on Thursday.

Vancouver Canucks @ Detroit Red Wings - Bet Detroit (-175) ML at SportsInteraction (Detroit 3-1 Final)

My Team's Next MatchDetroit Red Wings

Joe Louis Arena - Detroit, Michigan 7:30 PM ET Thursday, November 10, 2016

Streaky squads square off at The Joe as Detroit (7-6-1) hosts Vancouver (5-8-1) in an Atlantic versus Pacific Division duel. The Wings opened their NHL season with a pair of losses, and then reeled in six straight wins, before dropping five in a row. Detroit snapped their losing streak with a 3-2 (SO) win in Philadelphia on Tuesday. The Canucks sprung out of the gate with a 4-0-1 record but fell on hard times as they lost eight straight and were shutout in four of those contests. The 'Nucks ended their losing skid with a rather impressive 5-3 victory over the red-hot New York Rangers on Tuesday.

This is the Canucks sixth road game, in nine days, and they haven’t been good in the last contest of a road trip recently. Over the past two seasons, Vancouver is 2-1-6 in the last match of a road trip, of at least four games, and the Canucks were outscored 31-19 in those nine games. Jimmy Howard (3-2-0 GAA 1.26) faces Ryan Miller (1-6-0 GAA 2.76) in the goaltenders duel tonight. During their last visit to Hockey Town (18/12/15) Vancouver posted a 4-3 (SO) victory. Expecting a close match here, we are backing Detroit with the (-175) money line at the SportsInteraction online sportsbook.

Howard Stones Canucks: We are back on the winning track after Detroit posted a 3-1 victory over Vancouver tonight. While the Red Wings had just 27 total shots on goal, Dylan Larkin and Brendan Smith potted first period goals and then 13-year NHL veteran Steve Ott put Vancouver away with tally late in the third. To their credit, the Canucks peppered Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard who stopped 36 of 37 shots he faced. Daniel Sedin made the score 2-1 in the third period but the Canucks didn’t beat Howard after that. We’ll be looking to improve on our 4-1 record when we preview and predict the New York Rangers vs Calgary Flames clash on Saturday – See you then!

New York Rangers vs Calgary Flames - Bet New York Rangers (-140) Money Line at Bodog (New York 4-1)

My Team's Next MatchNew York Rangers

Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary, Alberta 10:00 PM ET Saturday, November 12, 2016

Teams at the opposite end of the spectrum meet when New York visits Calgary as the last contest on a busy eleven-game NHL Saturday night schedule. We've been watching both teams and find ourselves in a fairly good spot here. The Rangers have been stewing for three days after they were embarrassed 5-3 at home by Vancouver who were riding an eight game losing streak. Prior to that, the Blueshirts (10-4-0) had won five in a row and eight of nine. New York is five points behind first place Montreal in the Eastern Conference and they are 6-1-1 vs Calgary since the 2010 season.

Off to a rough start, under rookie head coach Glen Gulutzan, Calgary has stumbled out of the gate with a 5-9-1 record. The Flames have lost five of their last six matches by a 23-8 count during that stretch - including a 4-2 loss to Dallas two nights ago. Calgary is 13th overall with 38 goals scored but they have allowed 55 goals and their -17 GF/GA is the worst mark in the NHL. After signing big contracts, Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan have been underwhelming, the Flames defense is slow and Calgary leads the NHL in penalties. New York Rangers (-140) ML price at Bodog is right.

Rangers Douse Flames: We closed out our NHL Week 5 predictions with a victory as New York rolled over Calgary 4-1 on Saturday night. As our researched showed, the Rangers were the much better squad as they scored a pair of goals in each of the first two periods before taking their foot off the gas. Perhaps something positive to build on, Calgary was all over the Blueshirts in the third period as they fired 16 shots at Henrik Lundqvist and ruined his shutout halfway through the final frame. Not big on giving up pucks on the road, we're a little disappointed that we talked ourselves out of the spread price but we will take the win as we improved our record to 5-1 on the season.

NHL Live Scores Week 5

We mentioned the clubbing of Montreal by Columbus in our opening. Possibly following in the successful footsteps of their Cleveland professional sports brethren, NBA Cavaliers and MLB Indians, Columbus is playing exciting hockey and they have a shot at their third playoff appearance during their 16th NHL year. While we wouldn’t bet the farm, a small futures bet on the Blue Jackets to win the Eastern Conference can not be considered as "way out there" crazy. Columbus currently has +2800 ML odds to represent the East in the 2016-17 Stanley Cup Finals. Futures prices are at their ripest right now - whether at Bodog, SportsInteraction or any of the top rated bookmakers we recommend here at Canada Sports Betting. We'll be back with our remaining predictions on game day of both matches. In the meantime, our scoring widget below will always keep you up to date on LIVE action from the National Hockey League.
