NHL Picks & Pucklines Tonight

Will Canadiens Beat Canucks Without Weber?

The Montreal Canadiens and the Vancouver Canucks have dealt with injury issues more than other Canadian teams, making it difficult for these franchises to play consistent hockey. Montreal was without Price for a long stretch last year, and will miss Shea Weber for an indefinite period of time.

Vancouver’s been crushed by untimely injuries which have sapped precious depth from their top six group of forwards. They nearly lost super-rookie Brock Boeser too, but the phenom escaped serious foot injury after blocking a wicked shot last December. The Canucks will need all the help they can get after the NHL scheduled Vancouver for a loss on Sunday.

Oilers at Blackhawks – Bet Chicago SU (-150)

Hard to believe that Chicago has plummeted to last place in the Central, but that’s what happens when good teams play in the most competitive division in the NHL. Edmonton and Chicago have played each other tight this year, with each team winning a game in overtime. The Blackhawks have a slight edge over the last ten games, winning six, but the Edmonton Oilers have taken three of the past five, mitigating the historical edge.

Since Chicago enjoys home advantage and the Oilers played last night, choosing the Blackhawks straight up will be the preferable wager.

Sharks at Jets – Bet Winnipeg SU (-155)

The San Jose Sharks have been dealing with a tough road trip, losing two overtime matches in 24 hours against the Leafs and the Senators. A day of rest will help the Sharks, but they’re heading into one of the most difficult arenas in the NHL. The Winnipeg Jets have one of the best home records in the NHL, earning 15 victories in 19 games. Winnipeg misses Scheifele’s production as top center, but the return of Byfuglien to the blueline will help Winnipeg take full advantage of home ice.

Canucks at Canadiens – Bet Montreal SU (-180)

Vancouver should be pleased that Boeser earned rookie of the month honors, but the team faces a massive disadvantage on Sunday night. They’re playing on less than 24 hours rest, without Horvat, Baertschi and Tanev, all of whom contributed significantly to the Canucks strong start to the season. Without these players, Vancouver’s slipped to second last in the Pacific, losing seven of their last ten. The Montreal Canadiens still miss Shea Weber, but the Habs should be able to leverage rest and home advantages into a straight up win, even without Price.

Lightning at Red Wings – Bet Red Wings SU (+150)

Even the best teams enter slumps, and the Tampa Bay Lightning aren’t an exception to the rule. Their recent road trip handed the Lightning a rare two-game losing streak, and Tampa travels from Ottawa to Detroit on less than 24 hours rest, which greatly reduces the odds of snapping out of this losing trend. The Red Wings have also won four in a row and six of their last ten, trending the opposite direction of Tampa.

This is one of the rare instances when a positive moneyline doesn’t appear to match prevailing trends, making a Red Wings straight up wager a terrific value on Sunday.

Rangers at Golden Knights – Bet Vegas Puckline (-1.5, +150)

Vegas pulled off an impressive 5-4 win in Chicago, making the Golden Knights the hottest team in the NHL. The best expansion franchise in history could soon top the Lightning for top spot in the overall standings. New York tends to sputter on the road, and they’ll be heading to Vegas less than 24 hours after playing against the Coyotes. Since the straight up line for Vegas hovers around -200, you’ll need to choose the puckline to derive a decent profit from a wagering scenario that heavily opposes the Rangers.

Dirty Dangle Of The Night:

Chicago Blackhawks Beat Puckline Against Edmonton Oilers (-1.5, +190)

Since Edmonton was bombed out by Dallas last night, the odds are slim that the Oilers will be better this evening. Playing a pair of professional hockey games in 24 hours is one of the toughest challenges in the sport, one which will likely create an insurmountable barrier for Edmonton to climb. Chicago’s defense has been relatively weak because of goaltending injuries and issues, but the Blackhawks can still fill the net with the best of them. A +190 puckline offers a worthy reward for adding extra risk.
