Will Flames Cease Losing Trend Without Smith?

Pro sports squads typically have a “next-man-up” mentality, with players down the depth chart expected to step up and fill in for injured contributors. In some cases, the ailing player simply can’t be replaced because of his outsized role and world-class abilities. The Flames find themselves in this type of bind over the past week.

Calgary possesses an elite defensive crew, and a solid backup in David Rittich, but goalie Mike Smith has proven completely indispensable through his recent absence. The Flames managed to piece together enough points to maintain their spot on the playoff bubble, but Calgary needs Smith to return ASAP, or risk missing the post season.

NHL Lines: Lighting The Lamp

Senators at Blackhawks – Bet Blackhawks SU (-195)

Two of the most disappointing teams in the NHL meet in Chicago, with the Ottawa Senators travelling to meet the Blackhawks. Ottawa hasn’t been awful over their last ten games, earning six wins. Not so for Chicago, who have dropped nine of their last ten matches. The last time these teams met, the Blackhawks destroyed Ottawa 8-2 in Ontario. In scenarios where neither team’s any good, discovering who’s more likely to lose tends to be more useful than figuring out the better squad.

Ottawa’s more likely to lose because of their previous shellacking at the hands of Chicago. The Senators have beaten the ‘Hawks only three times in their last eleven meetings, and Ottawa’s terrible on the road. As such, a straight up Chicago win appears more likely.

Stars at Ducks – Bet Anaheim (-125)

Anaheim and Dallas have split their last ten meetings, but they haven’t faced each other for more than a year due to scheduling quirks. Both teams hover around the western conference playoff bubble, among a group of six teams between 69 and 72 points. Dallas has six wins in their last ten while the Ducks have five, although a pair of overtime losses means that both teams earned 12 points over their last ten.

Anaheim’s on a three-game winning streak and enjoy home advantage, while the Stars were chomped 5-2 by the Sharks a few days ago. Wager on the Ducks straight up, because they have stronger momentum than the Stars.

Flames at Golden Knights – Bet Vegas SU (-180)

The Calgary Flames need all hands at full strength to compete with one of the best teams in the NHL. Unfortunately, goalie Mike Smith will be unlikely to suit up, placing Calgary at a strong disadvantage. Without Smith, the Flames have been treading water to make sure their playoff dreams don’t become extinguished. Vegas continues their incredible roll through the regular season schedule, perched atop the western conference standings. Vegas already defeated their Pacific Division rivals in late January. Expect another Golden Knights win over the Flames.

Dirty Dangle Of The Night

Vegas Golden Knights Beat Puckline Against Calgary Flames (-1.5, +170)

Despite their best efforts, the Flames don’t compete as well without all-star goalie Mike Smith. Calgary’s dropped the puckline twice over the past week, although the team should be applauded for a clutch win against the Predators. Vegas has been one of the best teams against the spread, along with one of the best teams on home ice. Wagering on a Golden Knights puckline win improves profit for a tough Flames matchup.
