NHL Picks & Pucklines Tonight

Will Senators Start Climb Back To Contention Against Jets?

Ottawa’s shocking swoon in November finally halted with old fashioned, firewagon hockey against the surprisingly competent New York Islanders, scoring six goals to match their season high - and their total over their last five games.

Winnipeg has no trouble scoring whatsoever, netting 89 in 26 games, good for fourth in the NHL. However, the Jets have flown to the top of the western standings by vastly improving their goaltending and defense, jumping to seventh best in the NHL after finishing with the third worst goals allowed last year.

NHL Lines: Lighting The Lamp

Senators at Jets (Winnipeg SU -185)

Ottawa finally broke a seven-game losing streak, clutching out a 6-5 win against the Islanders. Their reward for a fine effort will be a matchup against the best Canadian team in the NHL. Winnipeg has a 9-2-1 mark at home, but the Senators have beaten Winnipeg in five of their last six meetings in Manitoba, which makes the puckline an inappropriate choice. The Jets still should be considered strong favorites, so stick with a straight up wager for Winnipeg.

Kings at Blackhawks (Los Angeles SU -120)

Chicago has dropped four of their last five against Los Angeles, but the Blackhawks have defended home ice successfully against the Kings during five of their last six meetings in the Windy City. After a disappointing 2016-17 season, Los Angeles has rebounded to start the season within a point of first place in the western conference, while Chicago hasn’t been impressive past the first quarter of the NHL season.

The Blackhawks have lost three in a row and play their second game in two nights, while Los Angeles is on a four-game win streak, enjoying an advantage in the rest department. Select the Kings straight up this evening.

Coyotes at Golden Knights (Vegas Puckine -1.5, +150)

The Coyotes have already lost three in a row against the Vegas Golden Knights, including two consecutive defeats by two or more goals. Arizona’s starting goalie will likely miss this game, along with key defensive acquisition Niklas Hjalmarsson. Vegas has performed extremely well despite various ailments, losing only two of their eleven home games this season. A -195 straight up moneyline isn’t nearly as profitable as the puckline (+150), so go ahead and wager on the spread to increase your winnings.

Stars at Avalanche (Colorado SU -105)

This game features a matchup which revolves around home ice advantage, with the Stars already losing their last two against the Avalanche in Colorado. The last ten meetings between these teams resulted in seven wins for the Stars, but Dallas hasn’t played well on the road, while the Avalanche predictably perform well a mile above sea level. Expect the home advantage to favor Colorado once again, resulting in a third straight win against Dallas this year. The Stars also have a 24-hour rest disadvantage, adding to the Avalanche advantage.

Dirty Dangle Of The Night – High Risk/Reward

The Avalanche will probably miss the playoffs this year, but Colorado and other Denver sports franchises have an innate advantage by playing their home games more than 5,200 feet above sea level. Human physiology requires a week or two to fully adjust to extreme elevation, and opposing teams usually have 48 hours at best to do so.

Dallas has less than 24 hours to acclimate themselves to the thin air and lower air pressure, and the Stars already have difficulty playing on the road. A sweet line of +230 makes the risk of betting on the Colorado spread a bit more palatable.
