NHL Futures: Week 22 Odds Update

Stanley Cup Championship Week 22 Contenders

Shake 'Em Up! That was the mantra in the National Hockey League as a lot of teams traded places week over week. Tampa Bay (89 PTS) and Vegas swapped the top spot for the fourth week in a row as the Lightning are now two points up on the Golden Knights (87) who have one game in hand. The playoff ranking moves were like musical chairs after that though as Calgary, 15th overall with 73 points, is the only team to retain their standings position. Making some wonder, did they peak too soon, Boston (82) fell from third to sixth as the Bruins went 4-4-0 over their last eight contests.

Nashville jumped from fifth into third as the Predators (85) have won four in a row and Smashville is anticipating another playoff run. Despite winning four of five Winnipeg (83) slipped from fourth to fifth. The Maples Leafs are on a 13-2-1 streak and that has pushed Toronto from sixth up to fourth. Philadelphia made a huge move as the Flyers (78) flew from 13th to 7th thanks to a 10-0-1 blitz of Eastern Conference clubs plus Arizona and Vegas. Minnesota (77) Washington (77) and Pittsburgh (76) round out the top ten. All the movement lead to plenty of changes on our NHL futures board.

Heading Into Week 22: Nashville has played a lot of puck but they are an experienced squad and we love their free-wheeling, rough and tumble style. In an effort to cover our early season blunders, explained below, we are adding the Predators (+900) with 2-Units to win the 2018 Stanley Cup. 27/02/18 Eastern Conference Championship Odds Update

Not as comfortable as it once was, Tampa Bay owned a ten point Eastern Conference lead prior to Week 15, the Lightning have a five point bulge over Toronto. The Bolts have two games in hand on the Buds and the standings will move considerably if the Maple Leafs drop a few contests. Despite their recent middling run, Boston is just seven points back - with three games in hand on Tampa and five on the Leafs. The acquisition of C Rick Nash, from New York at the trade deadline, may help but Nash has not produced the best numbers on offense during three straight seasons now.

Hoping Boston still has some gas left in their playoff tank, after their recent hot run, we are not as concerned with the Maple Leafs roll. As one of our preseason picks, we have full confidence that Stanley Cup savvy coach Mike Babcock will skilfully lead Toronto into the Second Season. While the Flyers move has been impressive, seven of ten wins were against teams that are golf course bound soon. That said, Philadelphia has jumped into fourth in the East and top spot in the Metropolitan Division race. Washington, Pittsburgh and Philly are separated by three points in a very fluid Metro.

27/02/18 Western Conference Championship Odds Update

While the East was definitely stirred - the West was shaken between Week 21 and 22. Vegas still leads the way but the comfort-zone is down to just two points over Nashville who have played one less match. Loving life, at home in Sin City, the Golden Knights just posted a 5-2-0 mark on their pond at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas fans have had tons to cheer about as the Knights are an NHL best 24-5-2 in matches played at the Phone Booth. Solid at home, plus sporting a 16-7-6 road record, the Predators tilted some during a 2-2-2 run but have rebounded nicely with four straight wins.

Winnipeg must be wondering what they need to do to win the West. The Jets are 11-3-2 over their last 16 but sit third - two back of the Preds and four behind Vegas. Minnesota has taken over third place in the Central, and fourth in the West, as the Wild went 5-2-0 during a seven-match string. St. Louis has been singing the Blues as they are 3-7-1 recently and have tumbled into a fourth place tie with Dallas. Vegas has a 12-point Grand Canyon style Pacific Division lead. San Jose, Anaheim, Calgary and Los Angeles are separated by three points in a ferocious fight for second and third.

West Playoff Race: Calgary Flames line will lose value once G Mike Smith returns from injury.

NHL 2017-18 Championship Futures Ticket Review

For those following along at home, let’s review how our 2017-18 futures are fairing. We are not in very good shape in the Western Conference – though we are not heavily invested either. With units in brackets, we have stock in Edmonton to capture the Cup (1) and the West (1) plus St. Louis to claim Stanley (2) and Dallas to win the West (1). We still have a shot with the Blues and Stars but we are not excited about those early season selections. Never about excuses; we will swallow the losses and move on. Plus, for hedge opportunities, the West Crew may be pups in the NHL Finals.

Better off in the East, we have Tampa Bay NHL Champs (3) and to win the East (2). Pittsburgh to claim the Cup (1) and the East (1), plus Boston (2) and Toronto (1) to win the East. While playoffs are still possible for everyone (except NY Rangers) in the mixed-up Metro, New York (1) needs to pick up pace for us to cash with our “Islanders make the playoffs” futures wager. Overall, we are OK with the eleven-units we've invested in the East race. Don't forget, March Madness plus NBA and MLB futures picks are being discussed regularly with prices from these top ranked sportsbooks.
