Woodbine Mile Odds

This renewal of the Woodbine Mile may lack star power, but more than makes up for that missing element with parity Delta Prince is listed as the 5/2 morning line favorite - and deservingly so - but the 5 year-old James Jerkens trainee who is a half brother to two-time Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Royal Delta, will have plenty of formidable competition.

Here's a look at the field:

  • 1-Good Samaritan 10/1
  • 2-La Sardane 15/1
  • 3-Delta Prince 5/2
  • 4-Vanish 20/1
  • 5-Mr. Havercamp 15/1
  • 6-Lord Glitters 4/1
  • 7-Oscar Performance 7/2
  • 8-Divisidero 8/1
  • 9-Stormy Antarctic 8/1

Did you know?

The fleetest of feet

The race generally goes to the swiftest, so that is the obvious place to begin the handicapping discussion. In the 2018 renewal of the Woodbine Mile, Delta Prince and Oscar Performance appear faster than the rest of the group, but European wildcards Stormy Antarctic and Lord Glitters could have plenty to say while receiving Lasix for the first time.

On the American front, Delta Prince has never finished worse than second in six career starts at the one-mile distance. He won the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes at Woodbine two back and finished a close second in the Grade 1 Four Star Dave in his last effort. Regular pilot Javier Castellano picks up the mount and the pair should be in the thick of things every step of the way.

Oscar Performance is a fast horse and should be prominent in the early going. When at his best, he's tough to go against, but must bounce back from a dismal performance in the Arlington Million where he was vanned off. The workouts suggest he's back on his feed and ready to fire.

Local sensation Mr. Havercamp is a perfect 4 for 4 over the Woodbine turf and is 2 for 3 in his career at the mile distance. The four year-old may need only slight improvement to find the winner's circle here.

Lord Glitters and Stormy Antarctic bring European class to this event as both are group-placed runners across the pond where turf competition is always very tough. As mentioned, each runner will benefit from receiving Lasix for their first North American start.

Bottom line and picks

Something about Delta Prince doesn't scream winner in this race. He'll be favored and likely overbet. I'll go another direction for both of those reasons. The Euros feel like second-class runners and Mr. Havercamp may be a step too slow to find the winner's circle against this level of competition.

With all factors carefully considered, Oscar Performance should win if he's ready to go. He gets my money.

  • 1st: Oscar Performance
  • 2nd: Delta Prince
  • 3rd: Mr. Havercamp
  • 4th: Lord Glitters
  • 5th: Stormy Antarctic
