Champions League Predictions: Wednesday Games Straight Up Picks
UEFA Champions League Predictions Today
Real Madrid's match against Dortmund was always penciled in as the key match on this final day of Champions League group fixtures, however the German side has performed dismally and will only travel to Madrid with pride on the agenda.
Elsewhere though, there are plenty of fixtures that do have a big impact and will go a long way in determining who stays in the competition, who moves to the Europa League and who misses out completely. Below are all the three-way odds, brought to you by Bet365.com.
Group E - Liverpool vs Spartak Moscow
The prospect of having five English clubs in the second round of the Champions League for the first time in history hinges on Liverpool's final home performance of the campaign.
The Reds will go into this match as firm favourites, however have only managed two wins against Maribor in their campaign to date. Their recent 3-3 draw in Sevilla from 3-0 up will still haunt Jurgen Klopp, and they also failed to beat the Moscow side on the road.
But Liverpool are a team in form. Since their loss against Tottenham at the end of October, the Reds are undefeated in all competitions and the performances of their attacking players has been crisp. Mo Salah is the Premier League's top goal scorer, and he and Roberto Firmino have been on fire in the Champions League. Our tip is for Liverpool to win, and you can jump on them at -450.Pick - Liverpool (-450)
Group E - NK Maribor vs Sevilla
Group E has been difficult to pick all season. Sevilla have twice come from behind to draw with Liverpool, yet were spanked 5-1 by Moscow in the Russian capital. Spartak we unable to beat Maribor in two attempts, yet both Liverpool and Sevilla managed to heap sixteen goals on the Slovenian champions in their three games played to date. Surely there will be no surprises here though and the Spaniards will get the win on the road.
Maribor do not have anything further to gain in Europe this season, and although they will want to put on a good final performance for their home fans it is hard to see Sevilla fail to pick up all three points. After working so hard to come back from 3-0 down against Liverpool, they now have a slim chance of topping the group and potentially bypassing the bigger teams in the second round. Either way, we expect them to get up - go for Sevilla at -500.Pick Sevilla (-500)
Group F - Shakhtar Donetsk vs Manchester City
Manchester City have been unstoppable in both the English Premier League and Champions League this season, and the sky blues will be looking to notch six from six in the competition with a win over Shaktar. The Ukrainian outfit are on the cusp of qualification, needing just a point to ensure they progress to the next round. A loss to City will leave the door open for Napoli, who are facing winless Feyenoord.
Donetsk have won both of their home matches in the Champions League this season, and will be confident despite coming up against the might of City. Pep Guardiola will almost certainly travel with a weaker squad given that they have already won the group and have a massive Manchester derby to look forward to on the weekend.
Given that City still possesses the greatest depth of perhaps any team in the world, they are still a chance of winning here, although Shaktar will be desperate to at least keep pace with their opponents. We see this one ending in a draw, a result both teams will settle for, and this presents great value at +240.Pick the Draw (+240)
Group F - Feyenoord vs Napoli
Few predicted that Napoli would find themselves in this position at the end of the group stage, however their failure to pick up a point on the road in Ukraine has left them needing a win against Feyenoord and Shaktar to lose against Manchester City. Looking at the table, this isn't an unreasonable prospect, however Napoli have been undone by poor timing.
The Italians played against Manchester City when they were at their strongest, while Donetsk will have a much greater chance of stealing a point, which would eliminate Napoli from the competition.
This is yet another match in the bottom half of the draw where the home side will be looking to play for pride after five losses in the competition, and Napoli should be too strong. Feyenoord have not performed too badly this season, but don't have the quality to take points off the Italians here. Go for Napoli at -334.Pick Napoli (-334)
Group G - Porto vs Monaco
Group G was always going to be the opposite of the 'group of death', with all teams involved in with a genuine shot of making the knockout stage. Monaco were perhaps seen as group favourites after they made it to the semi-final of the competition last year, however have been sent crashing back to reality after five matches in this year's tournament that have yielded just two points.
The strangest part of Monaco's poor showing is their home and away form. At home in the Champions League this season, Monaco have lost all three matches, while it is on the road where they picked up their two points. This is an intriguing statistic that Porto will need to be wary of, especially given whats at stake for them, although will be buoyed by their 3-0 victory against their opponents in Monaco.
Porto know a win is critical to their survival in the competition, and we expect they will do so. Pick the Portuguese side at -300.Pick FC Porto (-300)
Group G - RB Leipzig vs Besiktas
Besiktas have been surprisingly dominant in this group, winning both their away fixtures to date and wrapping up top spot with a game in hand. It will be interesting to see how they approach this match given it is now meaningless to their campaign, although momentum is always important to a side's success in Europe.
RB Leipzig have performed reasonably well in their first ever Champions League campaign and are still a reasonable chance of progressing to the second round. They will need to record a big win over Besiktas to give themselves the best chance, as they trail Porto on goal difference, although it is certainly a possibility given they have definitely improved and the Turkish outfit are not playing for anything.
Odds of -300 are on offer for the Leipzig win and are definitely worth backing, while it remains to be seen who will progress from a thrilling Group G.Pick Leipzig (-300)
Group H - Real Madrid vs Dortmund
It has been an absolutely disastrous tournament for Borussia Dortmund. The Germans came into the competition in great form domestically, although since their Matchday 1 loss to Tottenham they have been playing catchup and have not recovered. Two draws to Cypriot champions APOEL were fatal to their chances of making up ground on Real and Spurs, and they have limped to just two points from five matches.
Madrid haven't had it all their own way in Group H. The defending champions weren't able to defeat Tottenham, and despite Cristiano Ronaldo scoring eight goals (he leads the tournament) Real will enter the second round of the competition as group runner-up, with a huge chance of coming up against English opposition again.
Madrid should comfortably win against a disappointing Dortmund here, and their odds of -223 are worth taking on.Pick Real Madrid (-223)
Group H - Tottenham vs APOEL
Spurs have been impressive in the Champions League this season, and while their form has dropped off a bit in the Premier League recently, they will take a lot of confidence out of their campaign. Many pundits were predicting Tottenham to fall short of qualification based on their performances in the last couple of seasons, however they defied the odds and will surely finish top of the group.
APOEL's contribution to Group H has been almost single-handedly ending Dortmund's Champions League dreams fro another season. The Cypriots have performed pretty well overall, however are no chance of taking anything from this game against a strong Spurs outfit. Even if Mauricio Pochettino sends out a second-string side they will get the points here. Go for Tottenham to win @ -450.Pick Tottenham (-450)
