Tyron Woodley vs Dana White: Woodley Threatens White
Since winning the UFC welterweight title last year, Woodley hasn’t earned himself any favours. He seemingly exacerbated his unflattering reputation with an uncompelling five-round decision win over Demian Maia in UFC 214’s co-main event, a card expected to eclipse over one million buys. The fight was so bad not only were the crowd booing but White himself bashed Woodley’s performance by stating fans won’t want to watch Woodley fight again. Woodley retaliated the day after.
Woodley Threatens to Expose White
“I’m going to leak some s*** the people don’t want to be out in the wind,” Woodley exclaimed on the Monday edition of the MMA Hour. “You need to be a man, you owe me a public apology.”
Woodley went on a tirade on the highly-watched talk show hosted by award-winning MMA journalist Ariel Helwani. The three-time defending welterweight champion didn’t mince words. He defended himself stating he wasn’t just a well-behaved professional fighter but also did extra duties as a FOX analyst and was completely blindsided by White, whose main task is to promote fighters.
“I don’t care so much about the fans but when your job title is promoter, promote your f***ing fighters. You’re going to publicly scrutinize me, Dana White? You publicly need to apologize to me.”
The American Top Team fighter tore his labrum during the bout and is currently on medical suspension for up to 180 days. Despite this, Woodley soundly beat Maia who had no answers for Woodley after all 21 of his takedown attempts were negated by the NCAA Division I All-American. Woodley then outstruck Maia for all five rounds but it was a slow arduous process met by boos and jeers from the sold-out Honda Center in Anaheim. Woodley’s previous fight, a rematch against Stephen Thompson, was similarly met with boos.
White Should Be a Better Promoter
Though not entirely his fault, Woodley is earning the dubious distinction as being one of the least entertaining UFC champions. In an era where the spectacle seems to outweigh the sport’s competitive nature, this doesn’t bode well for the champion.
But to Woodley’s credit, he was right with White needing to be a better promoter not just for his sake for the promotion’s. The UFC is struggling to create new stars and doing worse at selling PPVs not headlined by Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey, both of who are away.
White recently got into controversy by criticizing champions Amanda Nunes and Demetrious Johnson and has a history of talking down the UFC’s fighters. White had longstanding beefs with UFC legends like Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz, and even Georges St-Pierre. The polarizing figure has said and done plenty of questionable things and Woodley’s threat is one with plenty of weight.
Fortunately, the two apparently had a talk following Woodley’s expletive-laden rant. Only time will tell if White will eventually be easier on Woodley and if the longtime UFC President will take the higher road in promoting his fighters. Based on previous evidence, however, it doesn’t seem likely.
UFC Needs New Stars
The UFC was sold for 4.2 billion dollars owing its global popularity to that but outside McGregor, Rousey and the unpredictable Jon Jones, they don’t have any other stars. Hardcore fans will continue to flock to online sportsbooks to bet on the UFC but to gain newer fans, White needs to start investing in other talents. As for fans, a small investment with help from signup bonuses will go a long way as they can earn while they giddily watch the unique sport of MMA.
