Add another accolade for Abel Tesfaye, better known as "The Weeknd" as he becomes the first black Canadian to headline the illustrious Super Bowl halftime show. The Weeknd originated from Toronto and has since become one of the biggest music acts in the last ten years with over 45 platinum singles and albums. The coming Super Bowl will be held at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay tentatively on February 7.
The Weeknd becomes only the third Canadian to headline the Super Bowl halftime show but the first of black heritage. Previous Canadians have included Shania Twain in 2003 and Dan Aykroyd as part of the Blues Brothers in 1997.
The Weeknd makes history as the Super Bowl's first Black Canadian performer
The three-time Grammy Award winner will take over for Shakira and Jennifer Lopez from Miami last year. Although he's performed in other distinguished events such as the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA's), the Super Bowl is another deal as it is the most-watched event in America.
Other prominent Canadian music artists who have yet to perform at the Super Bowl include Drake, Justin Bieber, and the band, Rush. The Weeknd will join other music icons such as Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna as performers of the prestigious event.
The 30-year-old Torontonian most recently dropped "After Hours", his latest album which topped the charts in North America while the single, "Blinding Lights" became the longest-running top-five single on the US Hot 100. In short, The Weeknd remains ever-popular among the mainstream music crowd.
Super Bowl LV will be the 55th Super Bowl but will be the first to be held during a global pandemic. It's still unclear how many people will be allowed to attend the event. The travel restrictions among others may also make it harder to recruit other performers to star alongside The Weeknd.
News should come in the following days about the status of the Super Bowl, which will likely still proceed on February 7. If anything, expect surprises even on the positive side.
There have been some pleasant appearances at the halftime show as certain artists have appeared to perform unannounced. With social media and the 24/7 news cycle, it may be hard to have these kinds of surprises now. But you never know."The Weeknd, Oslo Spektrum 2017" by NRK P3 is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0
The Weeknd will follow other amazing Super Bowl performances
The Weeknd will have ginormous shoes to fill as recent Super Bowl performances have been off the charts. Last year, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez took the roof off the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami to the tune of 104 million viewers.
In 2017, Lady Gaga gave one of the most memorable performances and almost stole the show had it not been for an epic comeback from the Patriots. And who could forget about classic performances from Beyonce and Destiny's Child in 2013, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in 2009, and Prince in 2007?
Super Bowl performances have generally been good as the artists bring their A-game. The theatrics include fireworks, outlandish wardrobes, and a setlist of 10 or more songs.
Sometimes, performers make surprise appearances. Aerosmith, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige stunned everyone when they joined Britney Spears and *NSYNC in 2001. Legendary guitarist Slash joined the Black Eyed Peas in 2011 and Bruno Mars made a surprising collaboration with Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2014, which broke viewership records at the time.
It's anyone's guess who will join The Weeknd to perform at the Super Bowl. The pandemic may make it harder for other Canadians to join in, but artists from around the area like Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, and Diplo may be more interested.
