Super Bowl MVP Odds 2017: Tom Brady vs Matt Ryan Clash

Super Bowl MVP Odds 2017: Tom Brady vs Matt Ryan Clash

Tom Brady Powers Super Bowl Favorite New England Patriots

New England rolls into Houston led by All-World quarterback Tom Brady. Despite missing the first four games of the season, due to his NFL imposed Deflategate suspension, Brady posted an 11-1 record as he tossed 28 touchdowns with just two interceptions. Drew Brees (326) Matt Ryan (309) and Kirk Cousins (307) were the only pivots to surpass the 297 pass yards per game average that Brady posted. Captain America was also second behind Ryan (117.1) with a 112.2 passer rating.

Building on his own NFL records, Brady then made playoff starts #32 and #33 and led the Patriots to a 34-16 win over the Houston Texans and a 36-17 victory versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brady added to his NFL postseason records for most completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns as he pushed his money game mark to 24-9 overall. The GOAT NFL playoff passer also owns all the same records in the Super Bowl and is looking to become the first QB with five NFL Championship rings.

Matt Ryan Pilots Super Bowl LI Underdog Atlanta Falcons

Posting some of the best numbers of his nine-year career, quarterback Matt Ryan led Atlanta to an 11-5 regular season record and the NFC South Division crown. Most likely 2016 NFL MVP statistics, Ryan’s 4,944 passing yards and 38 touchdowns were both high-water marks surpassing the 4,719 PY and 29 TD numbers he recorded in 2012. Ryan’s minuscule seven interceptions were his lowest season total ever – just slightly better than the nine picks he tossed during the NFL 2010 campaign.

Ryan rolled into the 2017 NFL playoffs with limited playing experience. Picked third overall in the 2008 NFL Draft, Ryan was sitting with a 1-4 record over his first five big game starts. His numbers were fairly mediocre as he had a nine to seven TD to INT ratio and averaged just 246 passing yards per game. En route to Super Bowl LI, Ryan recorded 730 passing yards and scored eight total TD's during a 36-20 slugging of the Seattle Seahawks and 44-21 pummelling of the Green Bay Packers.

NFL Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award History and Sportsbook Tips

As is often the case with cute girls in high school and college – Super Bowl MVP awards are usually attracted to star quarterbacks. During the first 50 NFL Championships, pivots have earned 27 MVP trophies. Smothering defensive players have sacked nine MVP awards, running backs have gained seven, wide receivers have caught six honours and Desmond Howard sprinted to the only kick/punt returner MVP award during Super Bowl XXXI in 1997. Tom Brady aims to pass San Francisco 49ers QB Joe Montana and become the first four-time Super Bowl MVP. Matt Ryan looks to capture the highest NFL individual playoff honour during his first appearance in the NFL Championship match.

Pivots have won seven of the last ten MVP awards but a linebacker took home the honour during two of the last three contests. Santonio Holmes, with the Steelers SB XLIII squad back in 2009 was the last MVP wide receiver. We have to go way back to 1998 and SB XXXII to find Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis who was the last running back to claim the award. If the Patriots pound the rock on the ground, as we expect they will often to limit Matt Ryan’s playing time, New England bulldozer back LaGarrette Blount has a shot at ending the RB MVP drought. SBLI prop picks will be posted on game day morning - here and on our Facebook page.
