Raptors vs Wizards: Toronto Back to Square One in Must-Win Game 5

Raptors vs Wizards: Toronto Back to Square One in Must-Win Game 5

Raptors vs Wizards Game 5 Odds

My Team's Next MatchToronto Raptors

Both the Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards have been tough to bet on in recent outings. Despite a franchise-best 36-7 home record, they have only covered in four of their last ten home games. They are 5-4-1 ATS in their last ten. Washington is harder to trust with a 1-5 ATS record in their last six road games although these were mostly without John Wall.

With a spread of 7.5 points, oddsmakers feel this game will be closely contested just like the first game when Toronto won by eight (the spread was at eight in some books). Toronto should win this game but the spread is tricky and is a conservative spread that is between a blowout and a close game, two plausible scenarios.

Raptors vs Wizards Betting Trends

Toronto's recent betting history can be discouraging but against Washington, it's a bit more predictable. Toronto has generally owned Washington at home:

  • Toronto is 4-2 ATS in their last six home games versus Washington
  • Washington is 0-5 SU in their last five road games
  • Toronto is 5-1 ATS when the spread is between -7.0 to -7.5
  • Washington is 1-4 SU as an underdog in their last five games
  • The total has gone over in three of the four games this series

Third periods have been the ice age for the Toronto Raptors. It was during this period the wheels came off in game 3 and in game 4, they allowed the Wizards to drop 40 points, the same amount of points they held them to in the first two periods. Washington exploded in the third including Bradley Beal, who despite fouling out, dropped a team-high 31 points with five three-pointers.

Wall was again a catalyst with 27 points and 14 assists and he again outplayed Kyle Lowry. The Wizards were just much better offensively playing with more efficiency: 23 assists to just 13 turnovers while Toronto had 18 turnovers to just 19 assists. DeMar DeRozan scored 35 for Toronto but shot just 34.49 per cent. Serge Ibaka and the Raptors bench were quiet while OG Anunoby left the game injured.

Going back to Toronto, a better performance from everyone is needed. DeRozan can't carry the team. Most notably, Toronto needs to play defence for all four periods. If they can limit either Beal or Wall, it would go a long way. Ibaka needs to start contributing offensively again and if C.J. Miles can start knocking down jumpers, it's a bonus.

Raptors vs Wizards Game 5 Prediction

The Raptors ranked in the top-five in both offence and defence. They had the third-best net rating in the league and the best bench. They are the better team, no question. However, Toronto still needs to find the consistency especially when they are dealing with two all-stars who have the ability to dominate games with their scoring.

A recipe to the Raptors' success has been ball movement and scoring by committee. But this is clearly not as applicable in the playoffs and expect Toronto to keep struggling scoring. However, as the Houston Rockets proved, it's defence that wins games. Toronto can miss their threes and shoot under 40 per cent but so long as they clamp down on Washington, they will be in the game.

Allowing Beal and Wall to combine for 50+ points on over 50 per cent shooting is a recipe for failure. Lowry needs to step up and challenge Wall and they need to continue being aggressive. In light of recent events, the Raptors will show up for the fans. The energy will be there and they'll play solid basketball for four periods en route to a comfortable win.

Toronto Raptors -7.5 (-110)
