NFL Thursday Night Picks Week 4

NFL Thursday Night Picks Week 4

NFL Thursday Night Football

Chicago was one of several underdogs who made week three memorable in the NFL. Da Bears beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime at Soldier Field, taking advantage of the Steelers inexplicable trend of playing horribly on the road.

The Green Bay Packers avoided their own disappointment last week by coming back from a 14-point deficit, clutching out a field goal victory over the fuzzy Bengals while Lambeau faithful watched in horror. Incredibly, this was the first overtime win for the Packers during the Aaron Rodgers era, which could serve as a positive portent for the future.

My Team's Next MatchGreen Bay Packers

Green Bay needed a vintage Aaron Rodgers performance to return from a two-touchdown deficit, maintaining a share of the NFC North division lead in the process. The Packers won’t let their guard down again, especially against divisional rivals like the Chicago Bears.

Bet on Green Bay beating a 7.5 spread this evening. Both teams will play on three days rest, and NFL Thursday night games have been sloppy affairs in 2017. Neither squad boasts a fantastic defense, giving up more than 20 points per game this season. As such, bet over on a total of 44.5, with the expectation of a thirty-point game from the Packers.

Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers Preview

Coach Mike McCarthy should feel fortunate for the Packers 2-1 record after playing a trio of completely mediocre football games. The Packers are average on offense so far this season, while the defense has struggled, ranked 18th of 32 teams after three games.

Compare this to the 2016 regular season, where the Packers finished with the fourth best offense while the defense ranked 21st in the NFL. Green Bay won’t remain stagnant on the attack for much longer simply because they have Aaron Rodgers, but the defense is cause for concern.

Last year, the Atlanta Falcons pasted the Packers during the conference championship game, hanging 44 points on Green Bay. In week two of this season, Atlanta dropped 34 points on the Packers, cruising to a comfortable victory. Green Bay also allowed the worst offensive team this year – the Bengals – to score 24 points at Lambeau. Doesn’t matter how many TDs Rodgers hurls if Green Bay doesn’t find a way to prevent teams from scoring. Continuing along this path could prevent the Packers from earning a playoff spot.

The Bears showed that they will not hand out free wins this season, forcing opponents to respect their grit and hustle. Teams which don’t show up prepared, like the Steelers, will have a difficult time against Chicago. After three games, the Bears have beat the spread twice, once against Pittsburgh and during their home opener against the Falcons. Chicago doesn’t play as well away from Soldier Field, losing to the Buccaneers by a 22-point margin. As such, it’s extremely unlikely that the Bears will beat the spread tonight.

Playing on Thursday barely provides the rest needed for teams to recover from tough Sunday games. The Packers and the Bears both played overtime games in week three, making the situation a bit worse for both squads. Green Bay had the opportunity to stay at home, while Chicago had to spend some of their resting time on travel, making this short week more difficult for the Bears. Neither team will be well rested, especially on defense, which will inflate scoring above a 44.5 total.
