NFL Sunday Night Predictions
Steelers at Lions NFL Picks
Over the last two weeks, the Pittsburgh Steelers rebounded from an awful loss to the Jaguars to emerge as the current best team in the AFC, catching up to the Chiefs and the Patriots in the standings. Their impressive road win against Kansas City suggests that the Steelers have overcome their road woes. The Detroit Lions have lost two in a row, giving up 52 points to the Saints last week. This mini losing streak erased a promising 3-1 start to the season, plunging the Lions below the Vikings and the Saints in the NFC North.
Considering the extensive history of the Lions losing against the Steelers, a three-point spread appears to be a bit soft. Pittsburgh should be heavily favored, considering their defense and improved play on the road in 2017.
Pick Pittsburgh to beat the spread. Sunday night NFL football has featured more defensive battles than high-scoring games. Expect this trend to continue with a defensively-conscious Steelers squad and pick under on a total of 45.5.
Pittsburgh Steelers at Detroit Lion Preview
Pittsburgh rarely loses to Detroit when these two teams clash. The Steelers enjoy a 12-2 record against the Lions, and the last time Pittsburgh lost this matchup was 1998. Since then, Steel City won four in a row against Motown, with an average winning margin of 16.25 points. Home advantage improves the Lions odds of winning somewhat, because both victories transpired at home. Pittsburgh’s been known as a team which disappears on the road, but the Steelers seem to have figured out a new philosophy away from Heinz Field.
In 2017, Steel City has earned a solid 3-1 road record, including key wins against the Chiefs and Ravens. Ben Roethlisberger entered this season as one of the least reliable pivots on the road. Other than a stinker against the Bears, Ben’s performed well enough in enemy territory this year, carving out an 88.2 passer rating in four games. Truth be told, he’s played far worse at home, producing an awful 75.1 rating. Roethlisberger has thrown two more TDs and one less interception during away games.
Ultimately, a considerable chasm between the quality of defense will determine the results of this Sunday night matchup. The Steelers have proven themselves as one of the best defensive units in the league, allowing only 16.6 PPG – third best in the NFL. Pittsburgh’s perpetual blitz has racked up 24 sacks, which is second best in the league. Haloti Ngata’s injury proved disastrous for the Lions last week, opening the gates even further. Detroit has allowed 24.8 PPG, ranking fourth-last in the NFL. Pittsburgh RB Le’Veon Bell will probably feast.
Bell and Antonio Brown should serve as superb targets for Ben this evening, and the Steelers will take advantage of a lengthy Lions injury list. Detroit will be without the services of at least 15 players, while nine players will be walking wounded. Pittsburgh will be missing five players due to injury, and T.J. Watt appears mostly recovered from his ailment. There’s always a chance that the Steelers suddenly revert to a terrible road team, but their superb defense has travelled well. Expect the Lions losing streak to extend a few more years.
NFL Sunday Night Football Schedule
NFL Sunday night favorites have beaten the spread in all but two occasions. Both losses originated from the AFC West. Last week, the Patriots sacked the spread against a lifeless Atlanta Hawks.
Totals have gone to the under four times while the over wager has won three times. Teams appear to be playing better defense on Sunday nights compared to Thursday evening, which is dominated by the over in 2017. The powerful offenses of New England and Atlanta didn’t come close to last week’s projected total of 57.
