NFL Sunday Night Predictions
Falcons at Patriots NFL Picks
A mysterious AFC East losing streak envelops the Atlanta Falcons, who’ve lost two home games in a row against the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins. Atlanta needs to end this streak tonight to avoid falling to .500 this season. New England’s in a funk of their own, barely beating the New York Jets to hold onto top spot in the division. Tom Brady’s keeping the Pats in the hunt, propping up a surprisingly shoddy New England defense.
Atlanta’s slump will reach three games as the Patriots defend their home turf against the Falcons on Sunday night. The Falcons offense will score a bit more against an underwhelming yet improving New England defense, but the team won’t be able to overcome the advantage the Patriots enjoy at home. An outright win is more certain than the spread, which holds steady at three points.
The over/under is the highest of any game this Sunday, standing at 57 points. Given the Patriots prolific scoring, poor defending, and the latent potential of Atlanta’s offense, both teams might end up with thirty or more points.
Bet over and enjoy the fireworks tonight.
Atlanta Falcons at New England Patriots Preview
The New England Patriots were virtually declared the winner of the next Super Bowl before the season begun. A 15-point, opening night loss to the Kansas City Chiefs ended up serving as a portent of things to come, as the Patriots have appeared anything but dominant. New England has the third worst (!) defense in the NFL, allowing 26.5 PPG. This allowed Carolina to sneak a field goal victory over the Pats in week four, and nearly cost them wins against the Jets and Houston Texans.
Fortunately for New England, Tom Brady continues to play at a high level at the age of forty. He’s averaged 326.5 yards per game in passing this season, close to his career high of 327.2 in 2011. Brady’s interception percentage remains below his career average while his TD percentage is slightly above his usual rate. Impressively, Tom’s doing this without his favorite targets on field as injuries continue to affect Patriots wide receivers and tight ends. Without Brady’s steadying influence, the Patriots would be at the bottom of their division.
Atlanta’s been a bit of a mystery this year, starting out strong with three wins, before crumpling into a paper ball version of themselves. There’s no good reason why the Falcons lost home games against the Bills and the Dolphins, other than a lack of effort and execution. Certainly, the Falcons miss offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, but Atlanta still hasn’t learned from their Super Bowl mistake. Despite a superb pair of running backs in Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, the Falcons refuse to utilize the rush to control the clock.
Ironically, the defense has performed above expectations, while the offense is nowhere near the NFL-leading attack of last season. In 2016, Atlanta’s defense was fifth worst in the league, and this season they rank slightly above average. Matt Ryan’s MVP form has disappeared, throwing as many interceptions as touchdowns after five games. He should improve this evening against the Pats defense, but it won’t be enough to sneak away with a road win against New England.
NFL Sunday Night Football Schedule
Last week’s massive upset marked the second time a favorite hasn’t covered the spread on Sunday night. The depleted Giants pulling off a win in Broncos territory left most football observers scratching their head. Oakland’s the other favorite to fail the spread.
Over/unders have been 50/50, with the Giants responsible for two of three under results on Sunday night. NFL fans should be pleased with tonight’s matchup, which promises an evening of competent offensive football.
