NFL Picks: Giants at Packers Point Spread
New York Giants at Green Bay Packers
Feeling the Lambeau Field scoreboard operator will need to be on top of his game, the fourth and final Wild Card Weekend duel is shaping up as the most electrifying of the bunch. After the Packers posted a 23-16 win over the Giants in Week 5, on the not yet frozen tundra, Green Bay and New York are clashing for the second time this season. The Packers still had consistency at running back in that contest as Eddie Lacy was a week away from landing on injured reserve. The Packers then wobbled through their next six games (1-5) while the Giants went on a six-game winning streak.
While many have spouted off, whether in the sports, politics, business or the entertainment field, few have been able to back up their bravado like Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. From his infamous "Five letters here just for everybody out there in Packer-land: R-E-L-A-X," comment after a 1-2 start in 2014, to confidently proclaiming Green Bay would run the table after they opened with a 4-6 record this season, Rodgers talk is often backed up with positive actions. That said, the two-time NFL MVP was limited to 259 pass yards (2 TD / 2 INT) during the Week 5 win over the Giants.
Following a sluggish start, New York was 2-3 with a pair of come from behind wins before losing three straight by a 76-53 margin, the Giants 9-2 season ending run is noteworthy. While it wasn’t always against premium talent, the G-Men stepped up their game on defense as their streak was by a combined 221-167 final score. It all adds to New York being back in the playoff race for the first time since they upset New England during Super Bowl XLVI in 2012. The G-Men posted a 23-20 NFC Championship win over the Packers in 2008 and a 37-20 Divisional Playoff victory in 2012.
Giants at Packers Prediction
BET GREEN PACKERS -4.5 (-110) ATS AT WILLIAM HILL (Green Bay 38-13 Final)
Before we get to our prediction, we have to admit that we struggled when making spread calls on New York (6-10) and Green Bay (5-11) during the regular season. It has been frustrating as our 140-116 ATS record is second in our handicapping contest – two back of the leader who is at 142-114. The Packers went 5-2 against 2017 NFL playoff teams while the Giants posted a 3-2 mark against Super Bowl LI contenders. Apart from neither team having a very dependable rushing attack, both teams will be looking to air it out as New York allowed a tiny 86.6 rush yards per game (3rd) while Green Bay was 8th as they allowed 94.7 RYAPG. The Giants were 23rd allowing 251.1 pass yards per game – the Packers were 31st with 269.3 PYAPG. Backing the better pivot, and the home team, we are laying the -4.5 (-110) William Hill ATS odds and picking the Packers to win and cover.
NFL Wild Card Games 2017
This is the final opening round match of the 2017 NFL Playoffs. AFC Wild Card contests featuring the Steelers vs Dolphins duel and the Oakland Raiders vs Houston Texans tussle, plus the Detroit Lions vs Seattle Seahawks NFC battle, played out prior to this match. Visitors went 4-0 straight up during the 2016 Wild Card Weekend and three of our four 2017 picks won those road games. Home teams last swept the first round games five years ago during the 2012 NFL postseason. With our other picks, that were posted earlier this week, we predicted wins and covers by the Texans, Seahawks and Steelers so we are anticipating another hometown sweep this year. That’s a wrap of Wild Card Weekend but we invite our readers to check back here anytime, as our scoring widget will be LIVE during every match of the run to Super Bowl LI on February 5, 2017, in Houston, Texas.
