NFL Monday Night Predictions
Redskins at Eagles NFL Picks
NFL pundits noted that the Philadelphia Eagles would be improved over last year, but no one predicted that the franchise would fly up to the top spot in the conference. Last week’s road win against the Carolina Panthers announced their legitimacy to the rest of the league.
Washington’s also performing unexpectedly well, in sole possession of the second spot in the NFC East, behind Philadelphia. They want to beat the Eagles to maintain their lead over the horrible New York Giants and fading Dallas Cowboys.
The Eagles already beat Washington at FedExField in week one, and the Redskins defense is a bit banged up, so expect Philadelphia to win outright. A five-point spread is a manageable winning margin to achieve, giving the Eagles a great chance of beating the spread.
Washington’s defense isn’t at 100% and the Eagles defense allows 20.3 PPG, so a projected total of 49 points seems likely to go over. Philly should put up 28-33 points while Washington should put at least 21 points on the board.
Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles Preview
Philadelphia’s playing the same solid defense that helped them win seven games last year as Carson Wentz endured growing pains. Now that he’s transformed into a capable NFL pivot, the Eagles have taken off. So far, the only team to take Philly out has been the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the best teams in the NFL. Eagles offense has risen from 22.9 PPG last year to 27.5 PPG this year, good enough for sixth best in the league.
Wentz had an awful 79.3 passer rating in 2016, throwing 16 TDs and 14 interceptions in 16 games. After six games in 2017, Carson boosted his passer rating to 99.6, throwing 13 TDs and only 3 INTs. He’s also increased his rushing stats, earning 4.2 yards per attempt and 22.2 yards per game. One of the big offseason additions to help the QB was LeGarrette Blount from the Patriots. Blount averages a superb 5.6 yards per attempt, punishing defensive lines while opening the field for Carson’s improved passing.
Washington’s a solid team by any measure, but they lack the offensive weapons which lifted the Eagles to their lofty perch. Kirk Cousins is a competent pivot, but he can’t compete with the physicality and athleticism of Wentz. Washington gains yards on the ground by committee, with three RBs taking on most of the rushing load. The Redskins don’t have a powerhouse, Super Bowl winning back like Blount. Washington RB Robert Kelley will be questionable for tonight’s game, which would further reduce offensive depth.
A more worrisome trend for the Redskins would be the physical condition of their defensive squad, which has been decimated by injury. The defensive line, secondary and linebackers have all been affected, nearly allowing the 49ers to win last week. Washington already enjoyed their bye, and will need to heal on the go if they expect to earn a wild card spot this year. Tonight’s game against the Eagles is unlikely to go well for the Redskins, increasing the difficulty of their playoff hunt.
NFL Monday Night Football
Monday night football favorites have performed well this season, with five games ending in a covered spread or a push. Last week, the Titans managed to beat a big 7.5 point spread against the Colts, ending their losing streak against Indianapolis.
Scoring totals for Monday have been relatively low, although the Colts and the Titans bucked the under trend last Monday eve. Considering the upcoming Monday night matchups, tonight’s game between the Eagles and Washington could be the last high-scoring game for a while.
