NFL Monday Night Predictions

NFL Monday Night Football

Much of this Monday night matchup revolves around the health of Odell Beckham Jr., who appears ready to go for in week two after missing the first game with a preseason ankle injury. The Giants offense needs as many healthy targets as possible for Eli Manning, who doesn’t enjoy the benefit of a terrific offensive line. Keep close track of his status as kickoff approaches. Matthew Stafford was superb against Arizona, but he’ll need help from the rush and another good game from the defense to overcome the New York Giants defense at MetLife Stadium.

NFL Monday Night Football Week 2 Predictions

My Team's Next MatchNew York Giants

Most reports suggest that Odell’s ready to make his season debut, so you should expect the New York Giants to win a close one. The Giants should be able to beat a field goal spread by keeping Matt Stafford in check while squeezing enough offensive production out of their uninspired lineup. Don’t expect their offense to suddenly click just because Beckham’s back. The Lions have a surprisingly decent defense, which will transform this Monday night into a trench battle. The over/under rests at 42.5, but neither team looks ready to score twenty points. Wager on the under.

Detroit Lions at New York Giants Preview

The New York Giants were truly awful against the Dallas Cowboys in week one, turning a highly-anticipated matchup into a boring blowout. As usual, the G-men prevented their opposition from scoring more than 20, but you can’t win NFL games with a single field goal in 60 minutes. In the first half against the Cowboys, the Giants completed only a pair of first downs, while Dallas controlled the football the rest of the time. Doesn’t matter how good your defense plays when you simply can’t progress the ball downfield.

Eli Manning completed a solid 29 out of 38 passing attempts, but he threw for only 220 yards, which means he was constantly targeting short throws. The top two rushers were Paul Perkins and Orleans Darkwa, who combined for a total of 30 yards. Coach Ben McAdoo and offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan need to consider giving Darkwa more reps to get the run game going. Without a decent rush, Manning will be forced to continue throwing short passes for meagre gains. Odell in the lineup should help open the field.

The Detroit Lions were on their way to earning an NFC North division title last year, but they lost three straight to finish the regular season, before losing a fourth during their wildcard playoff against the Seattle Seahawks. Detroit won two of nine victories by a touchdown or more, with most games going down to the wire. Whenever the Lions faced a tough matchup, like the Giants, Cowboys or Packers, the team was unable to rise to the occasion.

A comeback win in game one could signal a turnaround for the Lions, but they’re on the road against a Giants team which will feel a sense of urgency after a horrible start to the season. Detroit wants to prove that they can hang with the heavyweights of the NFL in 2017. If New York loses this game, they would have to finish the rest of the season 10-4 for a realistic shot at the playoffs. The Giants will find a way to avoid starting their season 0-2, as long as Beckham plays. If Odell’s still hurt, the Lions will enjoy the advantage, so keep an eye out for news as kickoff approaches.
