Is Sonny Gray A Big Yankees Winning Deal For The Future?

Is Sonny Gray A Big Yankees Winning Deal For The Future?

Sonny Gray's Solid Numbers

Welcome back everyone, and today we'll be looking at another pitcher who hopes to give the Yankees the jolt they need to catch Boston in the division. Last time, we looked at Yu Darvish, his accomplishments on the Rangers, and how we expect him to do on the Dodgers after being traded. Today, we'll give you similar story on newly acquired Sonny Gray, but with stark differences!

My Team's Next MatchNew York Yankees

Gray spent his entire pro career on the Oakland Athletics. In 5 seasons with them, he has a 44-36 record, 3.42 ERA, and 1.20 WHIP. His only losing season was 2016, where he went 5-11, but right the ship this year to garner a winning 6-5 record before he was moved.

He also had a 3.43 ERA and 1.175 WHIP this season, which are very solid numbers, but as always, we're going to go a bit more in depth. Other than Gray's debut season, his SO/9 are the highest in his career, at 8.7. The same goes for his strikeout to walk ratio, which sits at 3.13. He's already matched his 2016 strikeout number, and has pitched 20 fewer innings. The 20-year-old also boasts a FIP of 3.23, which should be seen as a better metric than regular old ERA.

What has he done in the past?

Gray's 2015 year was his best by far. He was named an All-Star and was ranked 3rd in the AL Cy Young Award voting. He well deserved it, going 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA. His FIP was wildly higher though, at 3.45, which should have been an indication he would regress. And that's just what happened in 2016. Held back by injuries, he finished the season 5-11 with a 5.69 ERA.

Ironically his FIP was only 4.67, but neither number was up to Gray's past abilities. The takeaway from the FIP though, is that the season wasn't as disastrous as it initially seems.

Will Gray Succeed in the AL East?

There's really no way to tell with certainty if Gray will be a valuable asset for the New York Yankees not only this season, but in the next few. Luckily, he already had his debut with the team, so we have numbers for you... which seem to give a mixed perspective. Gray pitched 6 innings in his debut, giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 6. It's a small sample size, so it can't really dictate the future or project anything, but his decent effort still got him saddled with the L. We wouldn't be surprised if he lost his next start as well.

To make room for Gray, Joe Girardi sent Jordan Montgomery to the minors, but the 24-year-old might be back for a few starts later on. The rest of Yankees' pitching staff has been great though. Sure not, Los Angeles Dodgers good, but still top tier. Luis Severino has been a beast, and is clearly the Bronx Bombers' best starter, but Gray is a much needed number 2, especially with Michael Pineda out on the DL. Sabathia, Tanaka, and Garcia has been good too, but just inconsistent.

While an ace on the A's, it might be tough for Gray to adjust to playing in the AL East. Unlike Darvish, Gray's not changing leagues, so he won't have that new "easy" out to pad his stats. While injuries certainly messed up his 2016, look for him to get better in the long term.

Expect a couple more shaky starts and articles chastising the All Star, but he'll eventually fit into his role. New York does have control of him until 2019, so if not this season, he'll be a great number 2 pitcher for them next year. For the time being though, I'd stay off until we see more.
