Mac Diarmida Stakes 2017
In what can only be described as a completely wide open race, the Mac Diarmida will likely come down to trip and pace handicapping. Graded stakes winners include Danish Dynaformer (10/1), Flatlined (20/1), Wake Forest (3/1), Charming Kitten (8/1), Mr. Maybe (10/1), Bigger Picture (4/1), Taghleeb (5/1) and Twilight Eclipse (12/1). Of those runners, Charming Kitten and Bigger Picture -both trained by Mike Maker - appear to have an edge in tactical speed. Addtionally, both runners are making their second starts off the layoff - an angle where Maker connects at a stellar 28%. Bigger Picture exits a win in the Grade 3 Conley Stakes at Sam Houston, while Charming Kitten ran deceptively well to finish fifith, beaten just a length and a half in the Grade 3 William McKnight Handicap January 28 at Gulfstream after a troubled trip and a lengthy break from racing.
Of the closers, Mike Maker also trains Taghleeb, winner of the McKnight Handicap last out and three of his last five starts. Wake Forest is a classy Chad Brown trainee who will see his first action since November 12 when he was defeated by Bigger Picture in the Grade 3 Red Smith Handicap at Aqueduct. Brown wins at a 25% clip with runners coming back from 60-180-day layoffs. Danish Dynaformer rates a long look for trainer Roger Attfield and should be ready to improve off his eighth-place finish in the McKnight Handicap.
