Frizette Stakes 2018

Frizette Stakes 2018

Like most fall stakes races restricted to juvenile runners, distance will be the key question. No horse in the field has raced beyond 7 furlongs, so the additional eighth of a mile here will be the proving ground.

Here's a look at the field:

  • 1-Brucia La Terra 12/1
  • 2-Jaywalk 5/1
  • 3-Take Me to Hardoon 15/1
  • 4-Nonna Madeline 6/1
  • 5-Graceful Princess 3/1
  • 6-Covfefe 8/5
  • 7-Cassies Dreamer 10/1
  • 8-Sue's Fortune 8/1

Betting Tips

Rising star?

You've got to be a healthy cynic to play horses. While it's easy to get swept up in the hype of an ultra-impressive debut winner, it's imperative to remember that such runners rarely duplicate those stellar efforts in start number two.

All that said and considered, Covfefe was sensational in her first start, crushing maidens by 9 1/4-lengths Sept.16 at Churchill Downs. She earned a Beyer Figure of 86 for the effort and it should be noted just how rare a feat that is for juvenile runners of either gender at Churchill Downs.

The Brad Cox-trained filly is extremely well-bred, fast, and appears to be training very well for this race. Adding confidence to the race betting mind, Cox could have simply kept this one in her home stall at Churchill Downs and trained up to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. He opted to strike while the iron is red-hot - presumably to secure a Grade 1 win.

It all makes perfect sense, but Covfefe will have to stretch from 6 furlongs to a mile and must also be able to take her show on the road. Frequently, the Belmont main track, known as "Big Sandy," can prove a tiring and daunting obstacle for horses uninitiated to its characteristics.

Other betting options

Brucia La Terra, Jaywalk and Cassies Dreamer are all interesting choices here should the favorite falter. Each of the three has shown the ability to pass horses in the stretch, which will be needed to chase down the speedy Covfefe.

Cassies Dramer is particularly appealing at a price after finishing third in the Grade 1 Spinaway despite hitting the gate at the start. Her running style seems well-suited for Belmont and she should be rolling late.

As for a bottom-line pick on this race, I'll still go with Covfefe on top. An exacta with Covfefe in first over Brucia La Terra, Jaywalk and Cassies Dreamer seems like a plausible bet.

My exacta wheel: 6/1,2,7.
