2018 Cotillion Stakes Odds
Monomoy Girl, Wonder Gadot and Midnight Bisou are easily the three most accomplished three year-old fillies in the country and the last time the trio squared off, they formed the trifecta of the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in May. As unlikely as it is that all three would land in the same race before the Breeders' Cup Distaff, it's clear that race betting fans are the beneficiaries. While it's nearly impossible to imagine one of the top three wouldn't take home the top prize, five additional rivals will suit up to face them.
After post positions were drawn and morning line odds assigned Wednesday afternoon, here's a look at the field:
- 1-Norma's Charm 20/1
- 2-Monomoy Girl 3/5
- 3-Jump Ruler 20/1
- 4-Wonder Gadot 6/1
- 5-Separationofpowers 10/1
- 6-Chocolate Martini 12/1
- 7-Midnight Bisou 5/1
- 8-Dixie Serenade 15/1
The big three
As good as the top three are, let's be clear about one thing: Monomoy Girl is as elite and deserving a horse as her 3/5 morning line odds suggest. The Brad Cox trainee has won four consecutive grade 1 races and 8 of 9 career starts. In five starts this year, she's won by at least two lengths in every start but the KY Oaks where she defeated Wonder Gadot by a half length.
Still, bettors will be tempted to play against any heavy favorite when the rest of the field has such sterling credentials. Wonder Gadot was overmatched facing male rivals last out in the grade 1 Travers, but she should find things much more to her liking back against her own gender. While it's not clear how much the Travers took out of her tank, her best performances make her a player here.
Midnight Bisou, a grade 1 winner herself, was beaten three lengths by Monomoy Girl two starts ago in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks where she managed to finish second. Like Wonder Gadot, she is extremely talented, but probably a notch below the top gal here.
Any upset chances?
I'm leaning against any major surprises in this race, but Separationofpowers is a fast horse exiting sprint races who can affect the dynamics of this race.
Trained by Chad Brown, Separationofpowers captured the Grade 1 Test Stakes Aug.4 at Saratoga in her last start. She will have to negotiate extra distance here, but is clearly a top-class animal.
Bottom line picks
I can't and won't go against Monomoy Girl here even though there are a few subtle reasons to take a contrarian stance. One such reason is that Monomoy Girl hasn't raced since July 22, but this was quite intentional. I'm encouraged with the reports and times of her recent workouts and believe she'll be ready to fire something close to her "A" game, which would simply overwhelm this field despite it quality.
Monomoy Girl is one of the most talented horses in training regardless of distance or surface. She gets it done here and I'm encouraged by the prospect of the others taking enough money away from her to avoid getting stuck with totally unacceptable odds. I'll bet to win at 4/5 or higher.
- 1st: Monomoy Girl
- 2nd: Midnight Bisou
- 3rd: Separationofpowers
- 4th: Wonder Gadot
