Toronto FC vs Tigres Preview

My Team's Next MatchToronto

First Leg Result: Toronto FC 2-1 Tigres

The scenario is simple for the reigning MLS Cup, Supporter's Shield and Canadian Championship winners - win or draw in Mexico against Tigres and advance to the final four of the prestigious competition. But while that sounds easy on paper, the first leg of their quarter-final tie showed just how strong their Mexican opponents are, and facing them on their own turf will be something else.

Tigres scored a crucial away goal in the opening fixture, which may yet prove to be decisive as the club from south of the border need only a 1-0 victory to secure progression. It would be a big win for the country if they can overturn the deficit in this tie - the Mexican media were 'shocked and insulted' at the three matches between Liga MX teams and MLS clubs last week which yielded three losses.

Toronto FC will carry plenty of confidence when they travel to the north-east of Mexico, although the playing conditions will be unlike what they are experiencing in the MLS at this stage of the season. Fitness will be a major factor in determining the winner, and we can't help but feel that FC could be underdone. That being said, their tenacity in breaking down Tigres in the first leg after going a goal down was something to behold.

For the Reds, Victor Vasquez remains a 50/50 chance of being included in the lineup. He was limited to a role off the substitute bench in his last outing after sustaining an injury in the regular season opener against Columbus. His inclusion would be crucial, particularly as he has played with Mexican club Cruz Azul prior to joining Toronto and is accustomed to Mexican football.

Before last week, MLS teams had won just 12 of 74 CONCACAF Champions League matches against Liga MX opponents, so while the three wins to the American and Canadian clubs were a great accomplishment, the reality is just two MLS clubs have been successful in knocking out a Liga MX side in the knockout round of the competition.

As much as it disheartens us to say it, we can't see Toronto FC winning this match, or indeed the tie. Tigres are a champion team and will bounce back to progress, while the Reds will gain plenty of experience from the dual.

New York Red Bulls vs Club Tijuana Preview

My Team's Next MatchNew York Red Bulls

First Leg Result: Club Tijuana 0-2 New York Red Bulls

Perhaps the shock of the quarter-finals was achieved by the New York Red Bulls, who were the only one of the three MLS clubs to travel in their opening match. It's a rare achievement to obtain an away win in this competition, especially in a country that has produced the winner of every CONCACAF Champions League final since the inaugural tournament in 2009.

What's more, the Red Bulls managed to keep a clean sheet in Tijuana, with the 2-0 victory providing a massive opportunity to reach the final four. Luis Robles had a stunning match in goal for the away side, producing no fewer than 13 saves to deny the hosts amid heavy pressure. He will need to produce again to ensure NY progress.

It's by no means done and dusted here considering the strength of the Mexican squad, although NY are definitely favourites to progress. A narrow loss to Tijuana by less than two goals will be enough for the Red Bulls to qualify, which makes picking the head to head result difficult.

This is summed up in the betting market, which are even across the board. You will get +143 for the home side to win, +178 for Club Tijuana and +204 for the draw. We don't mind the draw in this one, and the fact that the odds are so low for this result when compared to most matchups means there is a huge chance of this result occurring.

Guadalajara Chivas vs Seattle Sounders Preview

My Team's Next MatchSeattle

First Leg Result: Seattle Sounders 1-0 Guadalajara Chivas

Wednesday's lineup of CONCACAF Champions League fixtures features the MLS Cup finalists and 2017 Clausura champions Chivas, and the Americans will hold the slim advantage when they travel south thanks to a late Clint Dempsey goal at home. While the 1-0 scoreline ahead of a trip to Guadalajara will not phase the Mexican outfit, their failure to score an away goal may be costly, especially if Seattle can manage one.

The Sounders are one of the best defensive units in the MLS, although this fixture will test their mettle and resolve. Not many teams can come to Mexico and leave with something, although something (a point) is all they need to progress. An away goal would be golden, leaving Chivas needing three goals to advance, so look out for Dempsey to be the talismanic leader once again.

Guadalajara have definitely had the busier schedule compared with Seattle, who did not play in the league on the weekend. This match will be fifth in just two weeks, and the pressure may show if they do not achieve an early goal. Expect the home side to be strong early, although don't expect the Sounders to lay down and let them back into the tie.

Despite Chivas' dominance in the betting market (-175), we're going with Seattle to hold the home side to a draw here, securing their passage to the semi-finals and leaving Chivas to wonder what could have been.
