Canelo vs GGG: The True Superfight

It's the fight the fans have always wanted and it's the fight they get. Saturday evening, Mexican boxing sensation Saul "Canelo" Alvarez takes on the unstoppable Gennady Golovkin a.k.a. "GGG". The two have been on a collision course and have dispatched opponents left and right. Alvarez has a 49-1-1 record with 34 coming by way of T/KO. Golovkin spots a 37-0 record with 33 coming via T/KO. The fight will be contested at 160 lbs and will see Canelo move up in weight.

Following his all-Mexican showdown with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Canelo immediately called out Golovkin in the middle of the ring. "Golovkin, you are next, my friend!" Canelo exclaimed to which Golovkin joined him and promised a Mexican-style fight or in his words, a "big drama show".

From there, the two went on a worldwide promotional tour from London to New York to Los Angeles and to ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut. Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya rode shotgun during the trip and is doing everything he can to get this fight the attention it deserves even if the Mayweather-McGregor hype is still just dissipating.

The former 10-time world champion boxer lamented the crossover fight and many anticipated the pay-per-view buy rates for this bout would be affected due to the close proximity.

The hype for Canelo vs GGG has been somewhat low-key especially in comparison to Mayweather-McGregor but will dramatically increase the stock of the winner. For Canelo, defeating GGG means overcoming his greatest challenge and cementing his legacy as a star. For Golovkin, beating Canelo means showing the whole world he's a legitimate star.

Canelo vs Golovkin Betting Lines

Both men face a career-defining fight here. Whoever wins, goes all the spoils. Golovkin opened as a -175 favourite with a +138 come back on Canelo. The Kazakh will be the bigger boxer fighting at his natural weight while Canelo will be moving up. Betting action has so far tightened with bettors going back and forth on either fighter. But it has slightly trended in favour of Canelo. An interesting note is Canelo getting an immediate rematch if he loses but not Golovkin.

Canelo vs GGG Match Victory

The 18-time defending middleweight champion has been one of the most underrated boxers due to so many prominent talents seemingly avoiding him and for good reason. Golovkin is ultra- durable, powerful, and has an unorthodox style that is difficult to defend against.

Most importantly, he is both technical and ruthless. He will push the action and constantly stay active without getting too aggressive. Canelo has never been knocked out but Golovkin to win by TKO/KO is currently at +158 as a prop bet on Sports Interaction.

Canelo will have his toughest date outside Mayweather. While Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan were formidable adversaries, Canelo was the bigger and more powerful fighter. Against Golovkin, Canelo will have to be faster, more strategic, and more defensive, a role he's not used to playing often.

Oddsmakers feel the most likely way Canelo wins is through a decision at +201 and in contrast, the T/KO prop is at +422. While seemingly invincible, Golovkin showed some vulnerability in his previous fights and Canelo's camp can extrapolate those strategies used by Kell Brook and Daniel Jacobs. Canelo will definitely not want to exchange fire with Golovkin for prolonged periods and both men may have extended feeling out processes.

A bet for the fight to end by decision is at -125 (Bet365's odds) and is a solid play.
