Awesome Again Stakes 2018
There's a field of six to consider in this event, but the real action for most will come down to a proverbial match race. Accelerate (3/5) has been the best older horse in training in 2018, but he will be sternly opposed by West Coast (7/5) who makes a somewhat unexpected appearance in this spot after being away from the races since finishing second in the Dubai World Cup on March 31. Let the games begin.
Here's a glance at the entire field:
- 1-Shades of Victory 50/1
- 2-Isotherm 15/1
- 3-Prime Attraction 10/1
- 4-The Lieutenant
- 5-West Coast 7/5
- 6-Accelerate 3/5
The big two
Accelerate has been a beast, winning 4 of his last 6 races while posting Beyer Speed Figures between 107-115 in his last four starts. That's rarified air for those unfamiliar to Beyer Speed Figures, and his 12 1/2-length domination of the Grade 1 Pacific Classic last out was a thing of beauty. He's the clear favorite in all Breeders' Cup Classic Future Wagers at sites like Bodog, and SportsInteraction.
West Coast is a complete stud in his own right.
The Bob Baffert trainee finished second in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic to Gun Runner and came back to finish second again to that rival in the Grade 1 Pegaus world Cup. He was favored to win the Dubai World Cup last March, but was well-beaten by Thunder Snow to finish second yet again. He's the only runner in this field who can legitimately challenge Accelerate, but he will likely need this race to shake off the rust. Baffert surely has designs on running this guy in the Breeders' Cup Classic, but how much will he have in the tank after such a layoff?
I say Accelerate is the tighter and fitter horse right now. He gets the job done, but keep a close eye on West Coast. If he runs well, he'll be in the BC Classic at Churchill downs in November.
