AL MVP 2017: Blue Jays' Josh Donaldson Among The Sportsbooks Favourites

AL MVP 2017: Blue Jays' Josh Donaldson Among The Sportsbooks Favourites

2017 AL MVP Odds Roundup

The American League MVP, eh? Well you might think it's for sure gonna be Mike Trout. After all, the third baseman has been one of the best players in the league each year he's played, and already won the MLB American League MVP award in 2014 and 2016.

He's the favorite at +125 at Sports Interaction, but looking at the bigger picture, we find there's significantly more value on Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson.

2017 AL MVP Odds at SportsInteraction

Sports Interaction has the best odds on him at +1400 and in the Top 6 to win the award. So is he a good play? Well let's start off by trimming the field down. Trout won the title last year by being just that much better than the other contenders, but he's ultimately from a bottom tier team, and the Los Angeles Angels aren't projected to be that much better this season either.

Donaldson's from a playoff team, so he'll have a one up on Trout based solely on that.

As for Mookie Betts, he's actually priced reasonably and might be worth a play at +500. Whether the Boston Red Sox are great or horrible, the spotlight's always on them, and Betts's great run last year makes this play at this price very enticing. Jose Altuve has improved year after year, but is due to regress at some point. Miguel Cabrera, on the other hand, has had a resurgence, and while getting older, he's still good enough to be in the running at a reasonable price. Manny Machado is one of the best shortstops in the league, but is a bit slow and not on the best of teams.

AL MVP Odds 2017

So why is Donaldson the best choice? In the year between Trout's AL MVP awards, Josh Donaldson took it home in 2015. He should be able to bounce back and take it again. Sabermetric projections also help paint a good picture of how Donaldson will play.

His WAR is projected to be 6.3, only 2nd to Mike Trout's 8.0 in AL hitters, and 5th in HRs. It's the last season of his contract, so look for Donaldson to be aggressive. He is still recovering from a calf injury, but has rested and it shouldn't be a factor when the regular season begins.

Josh Donaldson MLB Regular Season Props

Player props aren't widely available yet, but based on past seasons, Donaldson is projected to hit around 33-35 HRs. He might not have another 41 HR AL MVP season, but if there are any props with his HR total set to 34 or under, the OVER would be a good play.

Sports Interaction has Donaldson at +1600 to be the HR leader, but we will lay off that play unless you can get it at +2000 or higher. He's capable of surprising us, but it's just not likely.

So we narrowed the field down to Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, and Josh Donaldson to win the AL MVP. Since there's little value on Trout, we suggest a play on Mookie primarily. At +1400 though, Josh Donaldson is nothing to sneeze at. He's won the title before, just 2 years ago, and is projected to play better than most other guys in the Top 6, and his WAR is only 2nd to Trout's himself.

Get on down to Sports Interaction and get these plays before they lose value. 2014 and 2016 belonged to Trout, and 2015 was Donaldson's, so will he take 2017 too? We think so.
