A Look at Team Canada Odds To Win The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017

A Look at Team Canada Odds To Win The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017

Concacaf Gold Cup Outright Odds

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is a biennial tournament that features the strongest nations in soccer from the Carribean, Central America and North America. The 2017 version will be held in the USA and the host nation are eager to add a sixth Gold Cup to their trophy case. Mind you they will have their work cut out to prevent Mexico from going back to back and winning their eighth title. The team from south of the border have just competed at the Confederations Cup in Russia and will have plenty of big match experience and fitness ahead of the competition.

Let's not forget Canada though. The only other team to have won the competition this century is due for a big performance at a major tournament and will be desperate to prove the bookmakers wrong. As per the table below, Canada sits seventh behind the two North American giants plus highly ranked Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras and even Jamaica. Surely they are a better chance then some of those teams based on the form of their best players in the MLS this season.

Concacaf Gold Cup 2017 - To Win Outright

Mexico +125

USA +150

Costa Rica +600

Panama +1600

Honduras +2200

Jamaica +2500

Canada +4000

El Salvador +6600

Curacao +6600

Nicaragua +12500

French Guiana +15000

Martinique +20000

According to the bookies, Mexico are slight favourites over Team USA with daylight in third. El Tri's favouritism among bookies is based on both their dominance in the competition as well as the fact they have played the most competitive matches out of any of the teams in the last month due to their appearance in the Confederations Cup in Russia. The Mexicans did play four games in just over a week, and while they have had a short break since then it is worth considering that many of their players have hardly rested since they finished with their European clubs.

The USA are always right up there with the top sides when the main sportsbooks list their odds in this competition and will once again be tough to beat. They have home advantage and also the luxury of being right in the middle of their MLS season, so you can bet the majority of their stars will be fit and raring to have a crack at this tournament. They will also be desperate to atone for a disappointing 2015 campaign where they finished fourth. They are always worth a bet but, like Mexico, will not provide much return.

Costa Rica appear in third on this list and it can be said that this nation is currently punching well above it's weight in world soccer. Their FIFA ranking as of June 1st is 19 which places them four positions higher than the USA, amazing considering that their population is only approximately 5 million. They also have a Champions League winning goalkeeper in Keylor Navas, so if you are looking for a team outside the top two that could challenge for the trophy, this is your team.

If FIFA Rankings are anything to go by, the other teams on this list don't really stand to be in the same discussion as The USA, Mexico and Costa Rica. This won't matter too much to Panama though. They sit fourth on the odds table and know that this is a tournament in which they can win big matches. The Central Americans finished third in the last edition of the Gold Cup and managed to beat the USA in their final match. Perhaps they are not ready to win the whole thing but certainly useful for a semi-finalist bet.

It is hard to believe that a nation as tiny as Jamaica could make it to the final of a major tournament but that is exactly what Jamaica did in 2015, falling to Mexico in the decider. Sitting at 79th on the FIFA rankings, the Jamaicans are a side that always entertain and they will be looking to improve on their last campaign, although it is hard to see them making that extra step this year...

How Far Will Canada Go in the Tournament?

Unless a player of the calibre of Sebastian Giovinco decides to apply for citizenship and join the Canadian national team, the prospect of a successful Gold Cup tournament appears to be unlikely for the Canucks. While many of their first team have spent the last few months making regular appearances for MLS clubs, it is hard to see this batch of Canadian players do any more than make the quarter finals at this tournament.

Canada will at least have the opportunity to kick off the tournament on the right foot with their first match against French Guiana. The minnows are entering their first ever Gold Cup tournament and should not be an issue for the Canadians, although should also be treated with respect - they recorded a 3-1 victory over Honduras in their Gold Cup 2015 Qualifier and are an improved side.

After this fixture, Team Canada face one of the best teams in the tournament, Costa Rica, and will have their work cut out against a highly skilled team. Their last match is against Honduras who are ranked 69th in the world. This game could very likely determine second place in the group so a positive result is critical to the team's progression.

At 109th in the FIFA rankings, Canada can only really move forward, and this tournament could be the springboard for a number of young players to prove themselves on the world stage. If they can manage to surprise a few teams, you never know how far they could progress, particularly in a relatively short competition like the Gold Cup. It will be very interesting to see how they fare.

Catch all the Gold Cup action from 7pm ET, Friday July 7th when Canada kick off their campaign against French Guiana. As always, you can join in the conversation on our Facebook page and discuss who you think will be this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup champions.
