Which Oscars Could See an Upset
Being one of the last awards shows to honour the previous year, the Academy is often the most predictable. It's been a standard for the Academy Awards to mimic winners from other organizations like the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and the Golden Globes. If a certain person or movie wins from these charities, there's a mighty good chance they win at the Oscars.
But the Academy has not always followed the script for whatever reason. And the voters are still human and prone to biases especially if recent events take place. Although most of this year's categories already have heavy favourites, a few are wide open and underdogs could shine through.
Here are our nominees for Biggest Upset:
Best Original Screenplay: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Odds to Win Best Original Screenplay:+185 (odds via SportsInteraction)
Jordan Peele's Get Out is the favourite to win here at -200 and it's hard to bet against it especially if the Black Panther hype rubs off on the voters. Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird is a sentimental underdog at +500 but our pick is Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri especially since Martin McDonagh was snubbed in the Best Director category.
Three Billboards is also a favourite to win Best Picture and strong performances from Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell will lead them to their own awards. Most importantly, the film touches on some of the most important issues in American society today from police brutality to racism to violence towards women.
And McDonagh also won the screenplay awards from both BAFTA and the Golden Globes making this a solid bet at plus money.
Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri
Best Original Song: Mighty River (Mudbound)
Odds to Win Best Original Song:+1100 (odds via Bodog)
Mary J. Blige became the first person to be nominated for both an acting category and a song and that's already a win in itself but while she won't upset Alison Janney for Best Supporting Actress, she'll shock everyone by winning this award.
Blige will be the benefactor of Hollywood that is scrambling to pander to the social justice mob for their lack of diversity and as shameless as it sounds, Blige checks off two boxes: being black and being a woman. And it's not like she doesn't deserve it. Mighty River is a moving song and arguably has the most emotional impact out of all the nominees here.
Remember Me from Coco is the favourite (-161) here but the writers have already previously won and This is Me (+150) is a beautiful song but it comes from a critically-panned movie, The Greatest Showman. This clears the way for Blige and Mudbound to score the upset.
Best Cinematography: Dunkirk
Odds to Win Best Cinematography: +600 (odds via Bodog)
Popular opinion places legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins as the odds-on favourite (-800) to bring home the hardware. Deakins has lost a whopping 13 consecutive Oscars despite working on the likes Oscar darlings like Fargo and No Country For Old Men.
This could finally be his year... if it were not for the Academy's hatred towards blockbuster movies and the science fiction genre, both of which Blade Runner 2049 falls under.
Instead, look to the Academy to snub Deakins and the movie entirely for Hoyte van Hotema's Dunkirk. The Academy adores war films and Dunkirk will likely miss the major categories but could clean up on the technical ones.
Best Picture: Lady Bird
Odds to Win Best Picture: +1400 (odds via Bodog)
A scenario that is crazy but still could happen. Lady Bird did bring home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in a Musical or Comedy and its main cast and crew are women. In the era of the whole #MeToo movement and Hollywood being harangued for numerous sexual scandals and perceived marginalization of women, giving the most prestigious award to Lady Bird is exactly the Oscar-thing to do.
This is the same Academy that gives awards to actors, directors, and various personnel simply because they are "due" and has ridden the socio-political climate. Get Out looms at +550 and could be another option for the Academy although they may elect to instead give single awards to the likes of Jordan Peele and Mary J. Blige.
Whatever the case, Lady Bird could pull the shocker of the evening by being shut out of every category except for the most prestigious one as writer-director Greta Gerwig and the mostly female team will close the evening with an impassioned speech that is sure to catch viewers' attention and make all types of headlines for the next few weeks.
